Players' Theatre Music Hall Authentic, traditional music hall presented and preserved by the Players' Theatre Club by introducing new artistes and reviving famous old music hall acts.

The Players' is dedicated to Victorian music hall: traditional English entertainment, with acts ranging from superb singing to ribald comedy, magic, monologues, juggling and novelty acts, with audience participation in popular choruses, all under the jovial eye of a witty Chairman. Massively popular in its heyday, the Players' performed almost continuously for over 60 years, showcasing the talents

of the cream of British theatrical talent - not just specialist acts, but also household names such as Peter Ustinov, Hattie Jacques, Maggie Smith, Clive Dunn, John le Mesurier and countless others. In 1953 the Players' featured in what was to become the BBC's longest running TV show - 'The Good Old Days'. After performing 'underneath the arches' of Charing Cross railway station for many years, the Players' finally shut its doors in 2002. In Memory of Sheila Bernette— aged 94

We were deeply saddened to hear today of
the death of Sheila Bernette.

Sheila was a much-loved performer whose career spanned decades across television, film, and the music-hall/variety tradition. She became a familiar face to audiences through her many TV appearances, including her work on Candid Camera (where she’s remembered as one of the show’s practical jokers), and as a regular performer on The Good Old Days. 

Her wide-ranging television credits also included well-known series such as The Dick Emery Show, Coronation Street, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, and Butterflies, along with later work in Hotel Trubble (as Mrs Poshington). 

For many of us, Sheila’s name is especially bound up with The Players’ Theatre. Sheila features in the Players-related film/documentary A Little of What You Fancy. 

Sheila brought warmth, comic sparkle, and a true music-hall spirit wherever she performed. We send our heartfelt condolences to all who loved her and worked with her. If you have memories of Sheila—particularly at The Players—please share them below so we can honour her properly.

Rest in peace, Sheila, and thank you for the joy you gave audiences.

Tomorrow on BBC Four at 8pm, enjoy a repeat of a classic November 1976 edition of The Good Old Days, celebrating the golden age of music hall — and featuring members of the Players Theatre, London.
