Happy Birthday, Igor Stravinsky! 🎂🎶

As we celebrate the legendary Russian composer, born on this day in 1882, we're looking back through the archives at this historic performance of The Firebird, with Stravinsky himself leading the Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in 1965. ✨🎻

Fun fact: Stravinsky wasn't the first choice to compose The Firebird for the Ballets Russes. After several composers turned the project down, Sergei Diaghilev turned to the young Stravinsky. The ballet became his breakthrough success and launched one of the most influential musical careers of the 20th century.

What's your favourite Stravinsky work? 👀

The bells toll for Aschenbach’s slow demise... 🔔

Taken from a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Death in Venice Suite, this moment captures the haunting atmosphere of Britten’s final opera all about obsession, conflict, and moral decay. 💃💀

Premiered on this day in 1973, Death in Venice was composed while Britten was seriously ill. Determined to complete the work, he postponed much-needed heart surgery until it was finished. Tragically, after suffering a severe stroke, Britten was never able to attend the opera’s premiere.

A burst of energy for the weekend with B8thoven! ⚡🎶

Enjoy the vitality and exuberance of the finale of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, conducted by Elim Chan. Beethoven's 'little Symphony in F' is his shortest and most light-hearted symphony, famous for its wit, playful musical jokes, and exploration of rhythm – departing from the heavy, heroic drama of his earlier works.

Where does Beethoven 8 rank among your favourite Beethoven symphonies? 👀

Celebrating Richard Strauss's birthday with his serene Four Last Songs. 😍🎶

Our connection with Strauss spans decades – from the iconic composer conducting his final public concert with us in 1947, to our recreation of that historic programme as the closing concert of our 80th birthday season in 2026. 🎼

Enjoy this beautiful extract from 'Frühling', performed earlier this season by soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha and conductor Thomas Søndergård. ✨

Did you know? In 1950, the Philharmonia gave the world premiere of Four Last Songs at the Royal Albert Hall, with Kirsten Flagstad as soloist. 👀

Did you know it’s National Accordion Month? 👀🪗

What better way to celebrate than with Latvian classical accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, who takes us through the ins-and-outs of the accordion, from its complex structure but surprising simplicity, to its wide-ranging sound.

Celebrating Robert Schumann on his 216th birthday! 🎉

Fresh from our recent performance of Schumann’s much-loved Cello Concerto with Kian Soltani, we're taking a moment to celebrate the birthday of one of classical music’s most influential composers, and look back at this special performance with Steven Isserlis.

Did you know, Schumann wrote his Cello Concerto in just two weeks in 1850? After the concerto’s publication in 1854, Schumann continued to correct proofs up until his death and this concerto was the last piece of music he worked on.
