We are having our annual Open Studios today and tomorrow! A time for friends, our local neighbours, and curators to come see what the 27 artists are doing in their studios.

Blackhorse Lane Studios will be opening our studios as part of the Walthamstow Art Trail 2026 on 13th & 14th June. We are in the Blackhorse section on the map.

There will be lots to see and do:

•Have a good look around, see inside each studio
•Chat with the artists and other visitors
•There will also be artworks on display in the corridors
•You can buy direct from some of the artists
•There will be ‘Small Prophets’, an exhibition of very small works in the Artworks Project Space downstairs - art you can hold in the palm of your hand!
•There will be an activity for kids

As we approach our Open Studios event this weekend, we are sharing short profiles of some of the artists who work at Blackhorse Lane Studios.

▶ Anja Borowicz ◀

Anja Borowicz is an interdisciplinary artist based at Blackhorse Lane Studios since 2013. Originally trained as an engineer, she moved into art and research.

Recent work explores collapse and recovery — how a nervous system withdraws under sustained pressure, what remains. She works with geological and bodily forms as equivalent structures, tracing this sensation across fragile objects, animated drawings, photogrammetry and virtual landscapes.

She collaborates across art, neuroscience and therapeutic contexts including stroke community.

As we approach our Open Studios event this weekend, we are sharing short profiles of some of the artists who work at Blackhorse Lane Studios.

Noga Shatz is a London-based multidisciplinary artist. She holds an MFA with distinction from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.

Her practice explores layered q***r identities through historical, mythological, & feminine narratives. Trained as a painter, Shatz pushes beyond traditional forms by employing experimental processes. Working with hand-dyed, unstretched canvases—often produced in domestic spaces such as her bathtub, she shifts her work away from the constraints of the male painter’s gaze, transforming canvas into sculptural forms that float in space. By embracing the fluidity of cloth, she reconnects her practice with the cultural & historical significance of textiles as a traditionally female domain.

A vital part of her work is community engagement. Shatz is the founder & co-director of The Open Art Club CIC, an LGBTQ+ led social organisation offering fully subsidised art programmes. She has partnered with other social organisations & funding bodies such as Arbeit Studios, & The Foundation for Future London to deliver inclusive workshops and talks centred on female, non-binary, & q***r identity for East London communities.

Her work has been recognised with awards, grants, & features, including The Eaton Fund
(2026), ZARATAN AIR (2025), Floorr Magazine
(2025), The Foundation for Future London Award (2023 & 2023), The Flux Review (2021), Arts Council England Grant (2020), the Rabinovich Foundation Exhibition Support Grant (2019), Highly Commended Artist at the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize (2019), the Slade Summer School Residency (2015), & Anthony Dawson Print Award (2015).

Noga Shatz 🏳️‍🌈 has exhibited internationally in both solo & group exhibitions.

As we approach our Open Studios event on June 13 & 14, we are sharing short profiles of some of the artists who work at Blackhorse Lane Studios.

YiMiao Shih was born in Taiwan, and currently lives and works in London. Her stitched images portray narratives composed with reality and recurring motifs which act as intermediaries between imagination and lived experience, reflecting contemporary conditions with a sense of playfulness.

YiMiao Shih has been with Blackhorse Lane Studios since 2023. Shih holds a BFA in Fine Art from National Taiwan Normal University, and an MA in Visual Communication from Royal College of Art, London. Currently she also has works shown in IMT gallery until 21 June, and Hackney Art Week until 14 June. She will be part of group show curated by GraphicDesign&, “The Other Side: Ten Years after the Referendum” at Pentagram’s Osh Gallery, London, between 22-26 June 2026.

In advance of our Open Studios event this weekend, we are introducing some of the artists at Blackhorse Lane Studios!

Although she thinks of herself mostly as a painter of still lifes, Julie Caves’ work often focuses on colour and light separated from the subject, letting the painting develop intuitively, and can be read as abstract painting. She says: ‘I often make a body of work because I have a hunch about an idea, I don’t know if it will work, but I want to see what it will look like.’

Julie has had a studio at Blackhorse Lane Studios since 2009. She has an MA from Camberwell College of Art, studied sculpture on an Erasmus term in Valencia, Spain, completed the 2-year Turps Studio Painting Programme in 2019 and has a certificate in Independent Curating from Central St Martins. She exhibits regularly. She is next showing three small paintings with AOAP Projects in Illuminated at The Royal Society of Art, 10-23 June.

As we approach our Open Studios event on June 13 & 14, we are sharing short profiles of some of the artists who work at Blackhorse Lane Studios.

Elizabeth de Monchaux is a sculptor who has been at Blackhorse Lane Studios since we began in 2008. She makes work for exhibition and commission. The challenge of making site specific work is what really interests her, whatever the size of the site.
