Bringing artwork home from your holiday rolled up?
It is worth getting the stretching done properly by someone with years of experience.
I trained with the best and have come up against many different challenges of handling and stretching artworks. For this particular stretching job I made two trips to the clients home, one for measuring and one for stretching, after the stretcher bars have been ordered.

Frame making….
Reclaimed framing material used to make … a frame.
Sanded, filled, stained and fitted. Here’s more pictures of the process.
I’m using a corner clamp, veneer pins, Evo stick wood glue (I’d rather have titebond), masking tape, Morrells filler, Village Green Stain.

Top tips for stretching canvas or artwork.
The other day I was stretching away as normal when my pliers broke and I thought that it would be a great opportunity to share how I set up a pair of pliers for stretching. These are the cheapest ones that you can buy ... transformed.
Step one, cutting some sticky canvas strips: Take some canvas and stick double sided tape to it (clear 3M is best, better than Gurilla), you want about a foot in length. Then cut out the taped area. Now you have 'canvas tape'.
Step two attach to Pliers: You only need to go around the teeth part of the plier once, so, do a dry run, without sticking the canvas tape down, to see how much tape you need. I've made mine long enough so that the canvas sticks to itself. Cut 4 pieces this length and attach.
Step three, the handle: You want to spiral the remainder of your canvas tape around the handle. I'd recommend a dry run at this too, just to get the angle right.
A simple way of making some otherwise brutal pliers into some really great safe to use grippy ones! Alternative, call me and I'll happily come and stretch your canvases.

I’m diversifying, diverging, I’m Framing things! I’ve made a bunch of frames for Ian Sparham. He’s gearing up for a group show in this years E17 Art Trail. It’s a huge event with over 200 venues showing over 8000 artists work. The level of work is high this year possibly because of the Borough of Culture in Waltham Forest. Ian was after a copy of a buttermilk finish for his frame, I hope he’s happy with the outcome. I’ve included some pictures of the making process here but I’m sure Ian has more/better pictures on his page - With different options for width and depth and colour and makes your painting really sing. Give me a call, if you need a frame, I’m happy to chat about it with you.

A recent project I was involved with stretching works by Joan Cornellà for Public.Gallery .gallery exhibition called ‘I’m good thanks’, dark humour and colour pop works, showing until 4th May. These Paintings were brought into the country rolled up and so needed measuring and stretching onsite. Public Gallery is a great space specialising in solo exhibitions. It’s free to visit and the area around the gallery has awesome projects .

It’s an ice breaker but people do ask me. What do you do? This is one example and maybe there’ll be more opportunities for me to upload a picture or two in time. This painting by Jean David Nkot had been shipped to the UK rolled up and then stretched. The gallery notice that one corner of the work was sitting away from the wall when it was hung, this is where I come in. I was asked to go along to Jack Bell Gallery to investigate. I’ve known Jack and Oly for a while and used to stretch works for them when I was working at John Jones. It turned out the stretcher had become slightly warped and the painting needed re-stretching.
The work involved for me here was to take the work down, unpick the staples, swap the artwork over to a new stretcher and re-hang the painting, careful work.
So, there are two examples of stretching. If you’ve got a rolled-up artwork that needs stretching or maybe you’ve got a painting that wont hang right on your wall. I’m experienced and fully insured to carry out this type of work, so, get in touch.

Due to temperature and humidity changes a buckling or cockling has occurred. Fortunately, we didn’t have to re-stretch the work and it was quite a simple fix. This painting by Nik Anikis Art of London Real
