FAMILY BUSINESS | ANDREW HEM
Hem’s biography is inseparable from an interrupted geography. Born while his parents were fleeing Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge genocide and raised in Los Angeles, Andrew Hem developed his visual language between the animist culture of his Khmer ancestors and the urban energy of the American city, where graffiti became one of his earliest forms of visual education.
In Family Business, this geography becomes intimate. Workshops, markets, shops, and fish stalls become places where everyday gestures carry traces of what came before and what will continue afterwards.
The title also refers to transmission: the crafts, recipes, gestures, rhythms, and habits that pass from one generation to the next. For Hem, this has a personal meaning. His father was a painter and art teacher, and Hem eventually recognised the same impulse in himself.
Family Business is therefore not only about work, but about what is inherited through proximity: what passes from one hand to another, and what survives within a family without ever being written down.
