Remembering the extraordinary Dame Diana Rigg, who passed away on this day in 2020.

Exactly 30 years ago this week, she stepped onto our stage as Martha for the very first preview of Edward Albee’s Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Directed by Howard Davies, the 1996 production also featured David Suchet as George, alongside Lloyd Owen and Clare Holman.

Hailed by critics as one of the most electric stage performances of Rigg's career, the role earned her the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress and an Olivier nomination the following year.

The production later transferred to the Aldwych Theatre for a five-month West End run.
