Adapted from the Palanca award-winning screenplay by Palomares, the entire film takes place in the kitchen, the silent witness to the life and love of Juanita. Through her cooking, which highlights various traditional Filipino dishes, we see her life and relationships unfold.

We're happy to announce that we're launching our new project, Film Screening Discussions!

In the wake of the current Marcos-Duterte tandem rising into power, with the former dictator's son as President, it is very dear and vital for us as the Filipinx diaspora to share the stories regarding the violent happenings that occurred during Marcos' Martial Law.

Liway shows in the telling of his childhood as the child of a Prisoner of War, Commander Liway, who led the guerilla groups within the Negros region. Through his eyes, we witness what his parents - specifically his mother - tries to give him a normal childhood amongst a very unnatural situation.

Following the screening will be a live Zoom Q&A with Dir. Kip and it is a great opportunity to be able to discuss the importance of such movies and how Filipinx diaspora's role in such story telling. Plus other questions you may have!

This is an event welcome to all and we also welcome donations towards an honorarium for Director Kip for allowing us his time and energy for this event and to support our future projects. Link in bio for PayPal, please do donate - however much or little as you can! We truly appreciate it 🙏🏽

Where I'm Coming From II
Panel Discussion, moderated by Dr. Patrick Flores

We are so honoured and extremely grateful to be able to work with incredible artists and curators for last year's Where I'm Coming From. Featuring Thai, Burmese, Tamil and Ewe languages for a month-long digital showcase, our collaborators unpacked several layers of socio-political issues and concerns that need to be further contextualised beyond the programme.

For this panel discussion, we invited the artists to discuss their practice, the contexts of their work, and how they navigate shared struggles and commonalities.

Thank you Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi, Thanom Chapakdee, Baan Noorg, Jiandyin Meemalai , Saroot Supasuthivech, Bindhumalini, Enchax, Nyein Chang Aung, Captain and Megborna for your generosity during the discussion. Special thanks to Alessandra Cianetti of Bagri Foundation for joining us.

🫕 Captain 🫕 As an Ewe, Captain has been so much inspired by many of the local Ewe traditional dishes. For WICF, he creates “Nɔviwɔwɔ”(companionship) a social event/happening. For this project captains’ kitchen would present a local Ewe dish “yakeyake”, steamed pudding made out of cassava. His encounter with that of “yakeyake” is a mixed feeling of love and truth to the self because eating it requires patient and flexibility. Captain will cook on coal pot in the open and with a locally made cooking pot specially for preparing “yakeyake”. The “yakeyake” is prepared over steam. The pudding is then kept in a gourd and served in leaves for the community to participate in the communion of love. The “agbɛlima” fresh cassava dough which is the main ingredient would come all the way from the Volta region and travel across a distance of about 300km to Kumasi pIAR residency. The accompaniment would either be vegetable stew or pepper with fish or mushrooms. Eating would be done in a cocktail manner with participants free to interact. This practice allows the community bringing to life Nɔviwɔwɔ. Genesis Foundation Bagri Foundation
