, Jacob's Pillow has revealed plans for a new Doris Duke Theatre to replace the original Doris Duke that was tragically lost in a fire in 2020.

Alongside Mecanoo, Marvel, and Jeffrey Gibson, we are thrilled to be consulting on theatre and acoustics for the new flexible, accessible, and forward-thinking venue while honoring the roots of the company.

Our final instalment of sustainable projects in honour of Earth Day is the ABBA Arena! 🌍

Charcoalblue were delighted to be appointed as the building-wide acoustic designers on this innovative new development for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The focus of the project brief was to create the world’s largest demountable and transportable concert venue and was developed using mostly lightweight and sustainable interlocking materials. The main structure was built from steel and timber, with extensive use of CLT (cross-laminated timber), a highly sustainable building material, throughout the front-of-house areas.

Today’s project case study with sustainability at the forefront is the National Theatre’s Temporary Theatre.

During the year-long refurbishment of the Cottesloe Theatre, the National Theatre built a temporary space in front of the building, known as the ‘Temporary Theatre’. The new 250-seat theatre was designed in close collaboration with the incredible architects Howarth Tompkins and the National Theatre client team to ensure the space was as low-energy, sustainable and recyclable as possible; a core mission in its temporary lifespan. Part of those efforts included repurposing the seats reused from the Cottesloe Theatre and a natural ventilation system.

The next stop on our sustainable project spotlight series, chosen by the Charcoalblue team, is St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY 🌍

St Ann’s Warehouse is a 25,000 square foot complex with two flexible performance spaces, a series of public foyers, and an outdoor garden. This project maximized the use of locally and regionally sourced materials, boasts energy-efficient technical systems, and houses stormwater retention systems designed in collaboration with the surrounding Brooklyn Bridge Park. St Ann’s Warehouse has been awarded a LEED Gold Rating by the US Green Building Council.

Continuing our Earth Day theme, Sydney Theatre Company is next in the spotlight! 🌍

Charcoalblue worked hand in hand with Sydney Theatre Company and Hassell Architects to refurbish STC’s home on Pier 4/5 in Walsh Bay, Sydney. The project has successfully rebuilt the Company’s two Wharf Theatres, creating a new sense of flexibility. The Wharf renewal continued the initiatives of the ‘Greening the Wharf', such as using hundreds of retained and designed solar panels, the recycled water system running throughout the building and the use of repurposed timber panels.

In celebration of Earth Day 2023 on 22nd April, we asked the Charcoalblue team to share their favourite projects with sustainability in mind. 🌍

The Science Museum recently opened The Technician’s Gallery, a first-of-its-kind interactive exhibition that required localised acoustic interventions that promote speech intelligibility and enhance visitors’ experience, with a key focus on sustainability. After extensive research, we selected recycled PET fibre behind perforated valchromat panels, ensuring a high acoustic performance. The reuse of the PET fibre behind the acoustic panels means less plastic waste polluting the ocean, and a limited equivalent carbon cost.
