💬VOICING MASCULINITIES💬
Snippets of conversations from one of our 6 month follow ups with a group of young men that took part in our voicing masculinities workshops:
❓Would you say your views on what it is to be a man in today’s society has changed at all?
🎤“Yeah. [The Workshops] they made me think slightly differently, like just because a man shows his emotions doesn’t make him weaker or more feminine”
🎤“My idea of what it is to be a man has like changed more positively. Like before I’d be like well ‘men’ should be obsessed with cars and like obsessed with money and stuff. I’ve grown and matured so I know better that, that’s not really what it’s about”
🎤“Yeah coz at the end of the day, we’re all human beings. We all function the same”
❓ Would you say your understanding of mental health has changed since we last saw you?
🎤“A good mental health is like knowing when you’re wrong and knowing when you’re like bad”
🎤“Being a man is being able to seek help, like when you need it”
❓ Who do you think influences young men’s views the most?
🎤“People online”
🎤“Yeah they say stuff like ‘ah to be a man you need to be the moneymaker’ and ‘to be a man you can’t be seen to be beat’, stuff like that”
❓ What effect do you think that has?
🎤“Oh, I think it’s like, erm, they feel like they have expectations to meet and like, if they don’t quite meet them then, like, they might like feel like sad about it or something like that”
❓ Would you recommend these workshops to other groups of young men?
🎤“Yeah I feel like you can learn a lot and it was also enjoyable while doing it as well”
🎤“I think it can open your eyes to new ideas and cool ideas about how men should act and how men are”
🎤“Also - it can give you, like, give you guys an insight of the children’s life as well”
