Bed Bugs
RABLEY GALLERYđź’›

“Bed is where we lose ourselves to the night and let our dizzy minds take on unsettled forms, questions and distant recollections.”
Molly Martin has a particular preoccupation with the bed, a recurring theme for inspiration. Bed Bugs is an observation on the fuzzy and fidgety moments before sleep, where memory and conscious thought combine like sequins in a kaleidoscope, and we are taken on new journeys through the dreaming mind. Here, the bed almost shifts into a car - driving or perhaps floating.

Born in the English countryside, Molly Martin attended a small Steiner school for her primary education. Here she developed a deep understanding of creative handwork and an affinity for drawing and painting at a young age. Through these mediums, Molly endeavours to process complicated human relationships and interactions, and observes them through a lens of humour and playfulness. Her work is figurative and plays with narratives that speak of themes rather than specific stories. Her semi-swaddled, squashed figures encounter strange and symbolic surroundings in chaotic and ambiguous landscapes.

'Leaving for the Sea'

A recent polymergravure edition for RWA made in house

"I work within the realm of figurative sculptural tradition where the symbolic use of animal imagery is a potent and continuous source. Through my work I explore ideas of power, vulnerability, duality and grief, often creating personal allegories and metaphors by integrating, amongst other things, human and animal forms. It is important to me that my sculpture and drawings are accessible on an individual level as well as implicating more archetypal themes common to human experience and I hope that the resulting imagery holds both timeless significance and contemporary relevance. In my sculptural work I mainly use traditional materials such as clay, wax, plaster and bronze to create hand-held to life-size figures. I also draw in charcoal and conté pastel and make prints using monoprint, photogravure and etching processes." Beth Carter RWA
