Two striking collages by Anna Mac, currently on view as part of The Shape of Light.

Created with hand-painted and cut paper, each work is carefully composed through shape, colour and balance. The simplified architectural forms and flattened planes of colour feel distinctly Anna Mac, transforming imagined spaces into bold, graphic compositions.

Although not displayed in the main exhibition space, both works are available to view in our back room during the exhibition.

A beautiful painting by Monica Popham, currently on display as part of The Shape of Light.

In this work, Popham transforms an everyday architectural detail into a bold study of sunlight, shadow and colour. The blue gate, yellow wall and patterned cast shadows create a striking composition, where light becomes both subject and structure.

Her paintings often find beauty in overlooked corners of the built environment, using cropped viewpoints and precise observation to turn façades, walls and surfaces into vivid arrangements of form and atmosphere.

Lovely to see The Shape of Light featured in The News Line.

A big thank you to Sian Campbell for the thoughtful write-up on the exhibition, bringing together works by Anna Mac, BrutalWares, Elizabeth Power, Ellis King and Monica Popham.

The exhibition explores how light, shadow and colour can shape the painted image, moving between still life, architecture, figure and constructed space.

A closer look at Two Walls and a Shadow by BrutalWares, currently on display as part of The Shape of Light.

Stripped back to concrete, sky and shadow, the painting captures the quiet drama of Brutalist architecture. BrutalWares reduces the scene to its essential forms, allowing light to define the structure of the image and turn raw concrete surfaces into something still, atmospheric and contemplative.

A corner of The Shape of Light, bringing all five exhibiting artists into conversation.

Across the wall, works by Elizabeth Power, Monica Popham, BrutalWares, Ellis King and Anna Mac move between still life, architecture, figure and constructed space. Each artist approaches light differently, but together the works explore how sunlight and shadow can shape colour, atmosphere, structure and feeling.

The Shape of Light is now open at Well Hung Gallery and continues until Saturday 17 October.

The Bath by Ellis King, currently on display as part of The Shape of Light.

King’s paintings often hold a quiet tension between figure and space. In The Bath, light and shadow cut across the domestic interior, giving structure to the room while heightening its psychological charge. The work brings a more intimate, figurative voice to the exhibition, showing how light can shape mood, presence and emotional atmosphere

A closer look at works by Brutalwares currently on display as part of The Shape of Light.

Bringing a harder-edged architectural voice to the exhibition, BrutalWares focuses on concrete surfaces, cast shadow and built form. His paintings strip Brutalist architecture back to its essential shapes, finding texture, stillness and unexpected warmth in structures often seen as cold or severe.

In Parking and Two Windows, Popham transforms everyday architectural details into bold arrangements of sunlight, shadow and colour. Cropped façades, shutters, awnings and sunlit walls become carefully constructed compositions, where cast shadows give rhythm and movement to the surface of the paintings.

Both works capture Monica’s precise eye for architecture and place, turning familiar urban details into vibrant studies of heat, light and atmosphere.

Two new paintings by ANNA MAC currently on display as part of The Shape of Light.

In Observer 02 and Waiting Strangers, Anna Mac uses simplified forms, flattened colour and carefully placed shadow to create quiet, contemplative scenes. Light becomes a way of structuring the image, falling across floors, figures and architectural space to create a sense of stillness, distance and atmosphere.

Both works continue Anna’s interest in everyday spaces and moments, transforming familiar interiors and passing scenes into carefully composed studies of colour, light and presence.
