Leap in the Dark's inaugural production, THE HAT, is an original, experimental play written by Melissa R. THE HAT premiered at the 17th annual New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC, in August 2013. THE HAT is about a family of artists and recalls a simultaneous rise and fall - a daughter to her zenith, a father to his nadir...in a story about love, failure, redemption, and the mutable

nature of truth. In one unforgettable and life-changing moment, the swing era world of The Musician father collides with the Broadway glamor of his daughter. The Musician is played by jazz trombonist, David Gibson. Randel plays Ruth, the daughter and Rose,The Musician's wife. Rose has this to say about her family of artists:

“A woman can survive losing sight of her dreams. But if a man loses his way, he will take you down with him. In marriage, the extraordinary becomes ordinary. The intolerable, routine.”

Each family member speaks through their medium; interweaving dance, live trombone performance, and text into a complex narrative about artists and their dreams. RANDEL: (Ruth/Rose) Melissa, an actor/playwright/choreographer, performed in more than 2,000 performances of Michael Bennett’s original production of A CHORUS LINE on Broadway. In 2012, she played Trevor in the Los Angeles premiere of Sheila Callaghan’s ROADKILL CONFIDENTIAL, and she recently debuted a devised collaboration, ASYLUM,in the Son of Semele Company Creation Festival. THE HAT began as a composition exercise in a SITI Company workshop in 2007. DAVID GIBSON: (The Musician) David is an acclaimed NYC jazz trombonist. He performs regularly at a variety of venues in NYC, including Smalls, Smoke, Swing 46 and Fat Cat, with George Gee, Roy Hargrove, Captain Black's Big Band, and his own DG 4tet, which is featured on two recent recordings released by Posi-tone Records. DAVID JOHN ATTYAH: Art Director. Attyah, a Los Angeles-based contemporary artist, has exhibited his public projects internationally, cofounded the artist collaborative THINK AGAIN, and is currently proprietor of Phlat Phile in Los Angeles, CA. BRANDON BARUCH: Lighting Designer. Brandon's credits include The Second City's A CHRISTMAS CAROL: TWIST YOUR DICKENS (Kirk Douglas Theater), A KIND OF LOVE STORY (Sacred Fools Theater), The 33rd and 34th Annual LA Weekly Theater Awards (Avalon Hollywood), and Ken Roht’s 99 CENT ONLY SAME-O and Calendar Girl Competition (Bootleg Theater). He is also Staff Lighting Designer for The Hollywood Fringe Festival. FRED LLOYD: Costume Design. Lloyd is the Resident Costume Designer for the Gainesville Theatre Alliance (GTA) and an Associate Professor of Theatre at Brenau University. A working professional in Theater, Film and TV as a costumer, costume supervisor and designer, his recent credits include Drop Dead Diva (supervisor), Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and The Producers (designer-GTA), Walter Cronkite is Dead and Dames At Sea (designer-Highlands Playhouse) and Season 1 of The Walking Dead (supervisor). "Women of the Hat is a semi-autobiographical account of Randel’s time spent on the road with a national tour of A Chorus Line and how that coincided with [spoiler].

These two simultaneous life events are smartly juxtaposed through the use of Michael Bennett’s Chorus Line choreography and Randel’s own original text and movement."
