A fine art collection spanning 400 years, including depictions of London, works by major Victorian artists, and the underground ruins of London's Roman Amphitheatre. Guildhall Art Gallery was established in 1886 as 'a Collection of Art Treasures worthy of the capital city'. In 1988, when the Gallery was being rebuilt on its original site, Museum of London archaeologists discovered the remains of London’s Roman Amphitheatre. The new building was redesigned to incorporate the underground Roman ruins and opened in 1999. Please bear this in mind when posting your comments, especially regarding personal information. Today's featured artwork invites us to step into the peaceful world of the nineteenth-century countryside 🌿as we celebrate 'The Argyll Collection on Tour: Part of RSA200'📍 CHArts Argyll and Isles

🖼️ At the Cottage Gate by William Collins, from Wolverhampton Art Gallery

William Collins was one of the most popular artists of the early nineteenth century, admired for his charming rural scenes and masterful handling of light and atmosphere. Although less well known today than contemporaries such as Constable and Turner, his work was highly celebrated in its own time.

In At the Cottage Gate, a family pauses by a country lane, creating a scene of warmth, rest and everyday life. Beyond them, the road stretches towards a distant horizon, while Collins' delicate treatment of light and landscape captures the tranquillity of the rural environment.

The painting reflects the era's fascination with idyllic country life, but it also demonstrates the artist's remarkable ability to evoke mood through landscape. As art critic John Ruskin observed, Collins had a particular gift for capturing the subtle effects of atmosphere and light.

From 12-20 September, explore one of the City's cultural gems as Guildhall Art Gallery and London's Roman Amphitheatre take part in . Visitors can discover over 100 artworks from the City of London's collection, explore the Heritage Gallery, and step back in time beneath the streets of London at the Roman Amphitheatre.

👀Looking for free family activities during Open House Festival?

Join us at Guildhall Art Gallery for a special as part of the Gallery's popular programme.

🫧 Families can enjoy free creative activities, stories and dressing up, plus the chance to explore the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. Activities run from 11am to 4pm and are suitable for children aged 3 to 13 and their families.

There's plenty more family fun happening across the City too, including a Walking Tour Bus with Hullabaloo, family activities at London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE, guided family tours of St Paul's Cathedral, and free entry to Dr Johnson's House, where children can dress up in 18th-century costumes and try writing with quill and ink.
