Happy Birthday dearest Amy,

I’m so sorry you couldn’t be with us in person today. We miss you so much and hope you are shining brightly in your new constellation. Thank you again for the wonderful music you left us. It’s poignancy and humour is an inspiration to a whole new generation. Don’t know if you ever met the Oasis boys? Their song ‘Live Forever’ is for you today. Love from all of us.

I fell in love with photography as a child. My dad was an enthusiastic amateur and had a darkroom at home where he made white paper turn into pictures. It was magic to me.

The first roll of b&w film I shot was on a Pentax Spotmatic in February 1972. I was on a two week block course in photography at art college. It was thrilling to walk the streets of London capturing people going about their business. In the process of looking through old negs for a documentary being made on my work, I found these images all taken on my way to college. They have a feel to them now that reminds me of why It still means so much to me to freeze the moment - to enjoy it at leisure, forever.

Richard Ashcroft is headlining the Victorious Festival in Portsmouth tonight (28th August). Whatever the weather (currently heavy rain in Petersfield!) If you’re going Ashcroft and his merry band of rebels and renegades will take you on an incredible ride.

Dolly Parton RIP

Farewell and heartfelt thanks to luminous Dolly Parton, who wrote, sang and produced some of the most poignant songs of our generation, and whose personal generosity brought so much joy to the world.

These were taken at her Legend performance at Glastonbury on 29th June 2014.
The last one is a ‘joiner’ I made using images taken throughout the festival.

An exhibition of my work, Rebels & Renegades, has just opened in the Tolbooth Gallery in Scotland as part of the Stirling Photography Festival (until 26th Sept).

I would like to thank all those involved, especially curator, Malcolm Dickson of Street Level Gallery, Janie Meikle-Bland who helped install it and Nichola Meighan who interviewed me at the opening.

Jill Furmanovsky's 'Rebels and Renegades' is heading to Tolbooth for Stirling Photography Festival 2026. Showing from 14th Aug - 26th Sep.

Furmanovsky’s first portrait assignment was in 1974, photographing a young Stevie Wonder for the Melody Maker when one of their regulars was ill. Shortly after, she documented 'The Dark Side of the Moon' tour in 1974 and soon began working with other music publications including Sounds, NME and Record Mirror. During this time she documented the shifting tides of music in the form of punk, new wave, ska and reggae with bands such as The Clash, Bob Marley, Generation X, The Ramones, The Police, Madness, Blondie, The Runaways and Joy Division.

With the launch of The Face, the 1980s saw Jill photographing the stars of the new wave such as Boy George, Soft Cell, Adam and The Ants, Wham!, Spandau Ballet and emerging female stars such as Joan Armatrading, Kate Bush, Grace Jones, Bjork and Amy Winehouse, alongside established acts like Annie Lennox, Siouxsie (of the Banshees) and Patti Smith.

A selection of these images from Furmanovsky’s extensive archive will be displayed at Tolbooth, Stirling for this exhibition.

Four years ago I photographed the Major of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, at Glastonbury Festival. He had been speaking in a debate in Billy Bragg’s Leftfield which I had missed. I arrived to find him talking to members of the audience who had lingered behind. The evening light was beautiful against the cobalt blue of the tent. I used a long lens and couldn’t hear what he was saying, but I liked his vibe. He really listened, or seemed to, and gave each person his undivided attention and time.
