Listen to the Cabaret Artistes of Chat Noir telling you about how, in collaboration with The Lost Estate, we are bringing audiences back to the moment that Cabaret was born.
✨🐈‍⬛✨
Each of us has created our own homage to our heroes from the Belle Epoque in Paris, and the one fantastical night they all came together to share their ingenious work, to be inspired by (and challenge!) each other and to change the world.
✨🐈‍⬛✨
In order of appearance:
Issy Wroe Wright - bringing us her dazzling homage to Yvette Guilbert and the wit and vocal brilliance of musical comediennes.
Neil Kelso (me) - Illusion Designer and bringing you my hero Joseph Buatier and all the wonders of the golden age of magic and magick.
Joe Morrow - CoWriter, expert Cabaret Consultant and bringing us his magnetic Rodolphe Salis - the original host/emcee/compère and the beginnings of so much of the comedy we enjoy to this day.
Alexander Luttley (who you may know as Pi The Mime) - bringing us their breathtaking Paul Legrand and homage to all of the beautiful and powerful physical storytelling of poetic mime and transformational clowning.
Coco Belle - bringing us her captivating homage to the legendary Cléo de Mérode and all the burlesque, ballet, cancan, and dances that made history and continue to inspire us today. .coco.belle
✨🐈‍⬛✨
All of these works of cabaret art that we have created are preformed to beautiful and expertly arranged live music, played by the finest virtuosic musicians, and set within a story, world and multi-sensory journey by The Lost Estate and the result is wowing audiences nightly.
✨🐈‍⬛✨
Worth noting too that we created these roles, but we don’t all perform in every show - Fridays and Saturdays are the best chance of catching us all, BUT the show is always great because there is a brilliant team of Alternates who step in and perform the socks off these roles. They are the amazing: Pat Magus as Joseph Buatier .magus , David Alwyn as Rodolphe Salis , Duane Nasis as Paul Legrand , and Ruby Hewitt as both Yvette Guilbert and Cléo d

I can confirm, as you can clearly see here, they are, in fact, posters.

Reposted • The more I prepare for the 2026 conference, the more the Magician card inspires me. The programme for the 2026 event sits above my desk, serving as a reminder of the tasks and responsibilities ahead for this year’s conference.

My passion for honouring Pamela Colman Smith and the other ‘Magicians’ of Tarot this year runs deep—I’m not entirely sure why this timing feels so right, but it does. Now that we have completed the 22 conference years of the Major Arcana, I want to dedicate space to the masters who came before us, the Magicians, archetypes who possessed the knowledge, focus, and power that, in turn, brought all of us together.

This year’s conference will be special, I will make sure of that. The incredible lineup of speakers has each taken the topic in hand and created workshops and talks which will stay with you long after your journey home from the conference.

Come, join us in London, either in person or virtually. This will be a sold-out event.

“Arm yourself with clairvoyance.”

Today would have been Erik Satie’s 160th birthday, and I can think of no finer way to have marked it than spending the day sharing a stage of the Chat Noir in the heart of Montmartre with not one but two of the world’s most extraordinary pianists. Pictured here you see me and the phenomenal Kausikan Rajeshkumar having a blast. In the matinee I also had the honour of sharing that same stage with the amazing Hamish Brown - both performing works by the great man himself.

Satie wrote the most wonderful little nuggets of advice to people interpreting his music. One such delight was the expression “arm yourself with clairvoyance”, which is as good advice today as it was 130 years ago.

Every night I perform my own silent homage both to Joseph Buatier (one of the greatest magicians ever to have lived) and Erik Satie (who needs no introduction) - a story woven around a Gnossienne and illusions inspired by Joseph Buatier, a conjuror who believed, as Satie did, that art should be felt, before it is understood.

160 years on, the magic, music and need for clairvoyance is just as relevant and resonant as ever!

Happy Birthday Erik, thank you Hamish and Kaus, and bravo to the Chat Noir and all who sail in her!

A lovely 5-star review for CHAT NOIR! in The Stage.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Mesmerising”

“closely researched, rumbustiously alive”

“Skilfully written and directed by Will Kunhardt, the night takes place in a vast, sumptuously styled restaurant space (designer Thomas Kirk Shannon), and features great live music by Steffan Rees referencing Satie, Debussy and Saint-Saëns; interact renditions of boisterous, Baudelaire-esque poetry from venue proprietor and self-styled “prophet” of pandemonium Rodolphe Salis (a Rabelaisian Joe Morrow); and a delicious three-course menu from executive chef Ashley Clarke including coq au vin, champagne and cocktails with names such as Co**se Reviver, 1864.”

“With so much brilliantly choreographed bustle before the cabaret proper begins, the acts themselves have much to live up to. They do not disappoint. There’s tall, vampirically seductive dancer Cléo de Mérode (raven-haired burlesque artist Coco Belle); unashamedly l***y chanteuse Yvette Guilbert (sassy, operatic Issy Wroe Wright); slyly amusing, absinthe-guzzling magician Joseph Buatier (prestidigitator Neil Kelso), working a tarot pack or shooting fire from his fingertips; and, strangest of all, white-faced mime artist Paul Legrand (the graceful Alexander Luttley), by turns sweetly funny and macabre, and able to glide across the space like a morose ghost.”

“This sinister atmosphere, evoking Rimbaud’s poet state of “systematic derangement”, becomes particularly mesmerising in the middle section of the cabaret. Kelso fills the room with smoke issuing from his palms, and, in lighting designer Mike Gunning’s queasy, pea-soup glow, Belle and Luttley perform a wordless dance of doomed courtship, as a wide-eyed Wroe Wright looks on in an absinthe fever dream.”

“this is an impressive feat of co-ordination between theatre and dining creatives, and, at nearly four hours long, excellent value for money”

I can’t believe this is ten years ago! 🤯 What a blast! 💥

Reposted • 10 years ago today (?!) I took my family science show out on the road: a UK tour of “Caution: Safety Goggles Required!” 🥽🔥 - a show of curious questions and explosive answers!

I had such a fun month using giant props, big demos, loads of volunteers, and the occasional flamethrower, to explore a bunch of the “Nation’s Most Curious Questions” - from why beans make you fart 🫘 , to how rainbows form 🌈, to why chillies are hot 🌶️, to what Star Wars explosions would really look like in space 💥, and many many more!

Each show I also answered a load of the Audience’s Most Curious Questions LIVE! 😅

I toured with some great friends - was on stage with me providing musical accompaniment & laughs, handled H&S and all our pyrotechnics, was stage manager, and was my creative producer at the time helping me with this and other projects. Dream team!

We kicked off at the Gulbenkian in Canterbury before heading off around the country to 20+ venues, including The Lowry and Leicester Square Theatre! 🎭

💙 Thank you so much to everyone who came, asked brilliant questions, volunteered on stage, and somehow trusted me with a flamethrower.

Anyone still got their safety goggles? 😉

A lovely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review from of CHAT NOIR!

“an unparalleled evening of cabaret … the show is spellbinding and unmissable, reckless and eccentric, dangerous and outrageous, beautiful and Bohemian. ... I would urge you to take the trip back in time to Montmartre as soon as you can. Before it is too late and this show has sold out. A joyous night of escapism.”

“Le poète se fait voyant par un long, immense et raisonné dérèglement de tous les sens.”

(The poet makes oneself a visionary through a long, immense, and calculated unsettling of all the senses.)

- Arthur Rimbaud, 1871

This pic is me hanging out at the Chat Noir with some of my mindblowingly talented pals in Paris, 1896.

From left to right: Cléo de Mérode (.coco.belle), Paul Legrand (), Yvette Guilbert (), Rodolphe Salis () and Joseph Buatier () in the worlds first cabaret at the Chat Noir () with huge thanks to the entire cast, musicians, crew, hospitality team, and all our fellow creatives.
