Established in 2016, RCT is dedicated to providing an equal platform for music, poetry and theatre as both a catalyst for creativity and a hub for a growing community of artists from a variety of disciplines. Red Chord Theatre’s name was inspired by the ancient Chinese belief that when a child is born, their soul is linked to everyone who is destined to play a part in their life by a slender piece of red thread. The legend of the red thread (or cord) of fate resonated with our desire to forge unexpected but enduring relationships with, between, and among artists and audiences from vastly different walks of life. We also found this a perfect fit with the image of a musical chord, where many different notes are played at the same time to create new harmonies. Thus our name - playing on both ideas - was conceived as one that both embraces and communicates our identity as a company, and our commitment to using the three core disciplines of music, poetry and theatre to create art that unites and weaves people together.
