✨ Artist Spotlight: Thobile Nhlapo ✨
Artowo is proud to feature the work of Thobile Nhlapo, a visual artist and photographer based in Gauteng, South Africa, whose practice seamlessly combines photography, hand-stitching, and beadwork.
Drawing from Sesotho heritage and ancestral traditions, Nhlapo's acclaimed MORENA series explores the spiritual significance of farm animals as ancestral vessels. In traditional ceremonies, these animals play a vital role, serving as a bridge between communities, ancestors, and cultural memory. Through archival photographic prints meticulously adorned with hand-stitched gold beads, each artwork transforms into a powerful symbol of reverence, identity, and connection.
The series takes its name from the Sesotho word MORENA, meaning "Chief," honouring the artist's grandmother's mother tongue while celebrating leadership, spirituality, and heritage. Several works from the series were featured in Tender Resistance, a Women's Month group exhibition at Asisebenze Gallery in Johannesburg, curated by Tanya Krain.
Nhlapo's work invites us to reflect on ancestry, healing, belonging, and the enduring power of cultural traditions in contemporary African art.
