So as promised here are some lovely images of the celebration of food and music of Algeria that we put on at the Union Chapel Sunday School Hall, thanks to Cristina Carrasco.

We enjoyed Algerian tagine, mint tea, sweets and music... The Chapel also invited people to get creative thinking about our connectiveness to home through food...

We have the photographer Patrick Ford to thank for these.

We are grateful to everyone who came along to the event, and to the fantastic Takaleed trio led by Abdelkader Saadoun.

Thanks also go to brothers Khaled and Nunu who run L'Auberge on the Old Kent Road. Their food is the real deal and their efforts were so appreciated.

In Algeria not long before our event there had been some absolutely devastating wild fires stretching across north eastern parts of Algeria, destroying homes, wildlife, people.... The morning of our event we were in touch (thanks to a friend) with the organisation Association Nationale la Belle empreinte "الأثر الجميل" who are doing so much to bring relief to the affected areas. They have also been hard at work helping families sending their children back to school across the country. We have sent them what we collected that day, £120. Thanks to everyone who made that possible.

Belatedly sharing my scanty collection of images from the wonderful All Algerian Gastronomic Experience, part of the My Story Festival in the Union Chapel’s newly renovated Sunday School Hall. I invited Algerian musician Abdelkader Saadoun and his band Takaleed to perform, and on his suggestion, invited Nunu’s L’Auberge to cook for us. The hall is wonderful. The food was delicious: chicken, lamb and vegetarian tagine, with mint tea and sweets.

Impressively, Nunu got his timing just right, all the way from the Old Kent Road. So not only were we celebrating Algeria, we were bringing south London cuisine to north London!

All thanks go to Cristina Carrasco of the Chapel who not only invited us but crucially secured the funds. The chapel had a great team of volunteers helping out including our sound man Paul.

In 2003 when it was L’Année de l’Algérie en France, I was involved with a short film festival and we put together an evening of Algerian shorts. New friendships and three trips to Algeria have followed. It was fantastic to pay tribute to that, to my late friend and his family, to all the discoveries and friendships made since. Fun fact: Algeria is four times bigger than France. We hope everyone that came discovered something of interest. There was dancing and even hat-hurling!

More, much better photos were taken by one accomplished volunteer and those I hope to share later today.

It was great to come across a great busker outside London Bridge Station on the way home. Have you heard him?!

Come & Sing: Evensong for the Thames 🌊🎶

Join us at St Mary’s Rotherhithe on Sunday 27 September 2026, gathering from 3.30pm for Evensong at 6pm, as part of Totally Thames 2026 Thames Festival Trust

The service will include the world première of The Pulse of the River by Esther Beresford-Muravyeva & David Bottomley, alongside music by Monteverdi, Crabbe and Morley.

Tonight at the Clapham Grand, the Chilean band Inti-Illimani Histórico is performing.

We have had Italian singer songwriter Silvia Balducci come to perform a few times now. The coup d’état happened in Chile when they performed in Rome, when Silvia was in her teens. She has never looked back, and her renditions of songs from the New Chilean Songbook are some of the best ever, such was the impact of that concert on her all those years ago. They stayed in Rome and became her teachers.

Supporting Inti Illimani will be an emotional moment: Phaxsi Coca and Kanti Qena, two thirds of the family band SUMAQ AYLLU - Sagrada Familia. Tuned In Londoners know the significance of this performance, two years from when their lives turned upside down with the departure from this life of their beloved Raymi Willka and three years since the trio performed for us.

We’re going “All Algerian” tomorrow (Monday 4-7pm) in the newly renovated Sunday School Hall at the back of the Union Chapel.

Importantly we’ve news of two fantastic gigs coming up, with Eliza Marshall and then Errol Linton, the latter being our 15th ANNIVERSARY!!!!

We also recommend the Sarah Jane Morris concert on 20th September.

Thrilled to be invited to be a part of the Union Chapel Your Story Festival that is taking place mostly in their beautiful Sunday School Hall that they have recently finished restoring.

Invited to choose a particular gastronomic and musical culture to celebrate, we are going ALL ALGERIAN.

The event is this Monday 4-7pm (I know 4pm is early, but it is the perfect time for those just out of their in some cases first day back at term - if you can't make it till 5pm you will still be in time for most of what is happening.). The event is FREE!! L'Auberge restaurant on the Old Kent Road will be doing the catering and Abdelkader Saadoun of the Algerian band Takaleed will be performing as a trio.

There have been devastating fires in vast swathes of northern Algeria. We hope to invite donations for the rescue and recovery efforts there.

ARC Music have just released a timely compilation of music by women including Hanitra who recently performed for us for a fourth time. Amongst the other artists are the band Khiyo who have also, some time ago, played a beautiful concert for us.
