Marking 40 years of The Independent, Celebrating Free Thinkers at the ICA explores independent thought and filmmaking across a week-long programme 🎞️

Among the films screening are three distinctive British works: Clio Barnard’s Ali & Ava (2021), in which an unexpected romance unfolds in Bradford as two people from different backgrounds find common ground through music; Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin (2013), an unsettling journey across Scotland that questions what it means to be human; and Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992), adapted from Virginia Woolf’s novel, which traverses centuries to explore gender and identity.

Running 20–25 October, the festival spans documentary, international cinema, literary adaptations and conversations with filmmakers, writers and cultural figures.

Autumn Knight’s newly commissioned installation and audio work 'I Can’t Complain' brings together a suspended cargo net filled with black balloons and an immersive soundscape of dissatisfied voices, music and field recordings.

A recurring motif in Knight’s practice, the balloons hold contradictions: buoyant yet burdened, celebratory yet sombre, they embody impermanence and make the possibility of disappointment physically present.

On 10 November, Sara Ahmed joins us at the ICA for a special lecture on what it means to give “a feminist ear” to complaint.

Marking the publication of her new book, No is Not a Lonely Utterance: The Art and Activism of Complaining (2025), and coinciding with Autumn Knight’s exhibition 'I Can’t Complain', Ahmed explores how complaint can bring us together, enabling new solidarities and alliances in the struggle for change.

🎬 The Frieze × ICA Artists’ Film Programme returns to the ICA this week, bringing together 11 artists working across film and moving image.

Screening on a continuous loop in the ICA's Upper Gallery from 12–18 October, the programme spotlights early-career and under-exposed artists, with works selected from proposals submitted by galleries participating in this year's Frieze London.

Open to the public throughout Frieze Week, the programme is also available to stream online at ica.art until 30 October 2026 🌐

Featuring works by Dimitra Charamandas, Nina Davies, Kamil Dossar, Aziz Hazara, Julia Kater, Ali Kazma, Djofray Makumbu, Anastasia Sosunova, Khaled Jarada, Yuyan Wang and Biogal.

🎬 On 28 October, Éditions 1989 celebrates the second edition of Who Are You Dorothy Dean? with a 40-minute excerpt from Andy Warhol’s Prison (1965), featuring Dean, followed by a Q&A with author Anaïs Ngbanzo, moderated by Róisín Tapponi.

A key figure in New York’s 1960s underground, Dorothy Dean (1932–1987) appeared in six of Warhol’s films and inspired artists including Robert Mapplethorpe and Robert Creeley. She also worked at The New Yorker and Vogue before launching her own film review bulletin, All-Lavender Cinema Courier, in 1976.

🔊 Next month, Nosaj Thing and Daito Manabe bring their latest audiovisual collaboration to London for its UK premiere at the ICA. ◌

Since their landmark 2012 video for Eclipse/Blue, the LA-based producer and DJ and Tokyo-based audiovisual artist have continually pushed the boundaries of music and technology. Their latest chapter follows Material Works, a live AV installation developed with designer David Rudnick, and the release of new single LXR.

On 20 October, MACK Cinema Club celebrates the publication of K8 Hardy’s new book, Positions, with a screening of Outfitumentary (2016).

Beginning in 2001, Hardy documented her outfits on video, capturing both what she wore and the act of getting dressed. Over the following eleven years, until her camera broke, she recorded this process with a consistency that was almost daily.

Following the screening, Hardy will be joined in conversation by London-based artist and curator Nina Manandhar.

🎬 To celebrate the publication of 'Arrows of Desire: Selected Writings 1963–2002', the first of three new volumes of Peter Wollen’s writing, join us for a screening of his feature Friendship’s Death (1987), followed by a conversation with editors Kodwo Eshun, Oliver Fuke and Nicolas Helm-Grovas, moderated by Erika Balsom.

Arrows of Desire brings together unpublished writings by Peter Wollen on counter-cinema, anti-imperialist politics and revolutionary art. Spanning film, video and global culture, these texts reveal how Wollen reinvented criticism as a formally experimental practice, attentive to the intellectual, political and artistic histories of the twentieth century.
