Tate's Work of the Week is this 'dreamy charcoal creation by Paule Vézelay'… Paule Vézelay (1892-1934) was an active member of the Parisian avant-garde and a member of the group Abstraction-Création who exhibited in several significant exhibitions of non-figurative art in Europe in the 1930s. British artist, Paul Nash wrote in 1936 that Vézelay “contributed steadily to the modern movement.” England & Co represent the Estate of Paule Vézelay.

Work of the Week is a dreamy charcoal creation by Paule Vézelay, typical of her time spent in Paris. The work holds an otherworldly quality with its pure, spherical forms that float within a grainy grey. https://bit.ly/3cXEZRg

In 1946 Barbara Hepworth wrote, ‘I rarely make drawings for a particular sculpture… I do, however, spend whole periods of time entirely in drawing when I search for forms and rhythms and curvatures for my own satisfaction.’

In 1946 Barbara Hepworth wrote, ‘I rarely make drawings for a particular sculpture… I do, however, spend whole periods of time entirely in drawing when I search for forms and rhythms and curvatures for my own satisfaction.’

In this lithograph, Genesis, two circles are placed in relation to one another, like planets hanging in space, while the title alludes to the biblical story of the creation of the universe.

At this time space exploration was in the public consciousness, and Hepworth noted the year this was made: ‘We’ve all assimilated a great deal of scientific discovery – the sensation of space, as well as a new conception of the universe’.

***UPDATE***

To protect the health and wellbeing of our visitors, staff, artists and volunteers we have taken the decision to close The Hepworth Wakefield from 4pm on Wednesday 18 March until further notice. The Hepworth Wakefield Garden will remain open for people to enjoy.
