CHASING THE SUN
Yesterday’s total solar eclipse gave people in northern Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Portugal the chance to gaze up at Totality – the awe-inspiring sight of the moon completely blocking the sun – for a maximum of 2 minutes 18 seconds. In 1973, astronomers in the UK and France figured out a way to observe Totality for 74 MINUTES 🌑
The only problem? They would have to get their hands on a Concorde: the experimental supersonic airliner that was still in the prototype/testing stage. And then? Figure out a way to intercept the eclipse at Mach 2.05 high above the Sahara Desert.
