Que pena, que pena
We got to lose Gal Costa’s brilhante/radiante presence on this Earth…
In my bossa nova ethnomusicological studies (when I still wanted to play in a samba band) I had the pleasure to ‘encounter’ Caetano Veloso’s biography on Tropicalismo and this revolutionary movement that happened in this beloved land, during 60s-70s, ‘heart of the world’, Brazil, where Gal gave her wonderful voice to expand and overcome boundaries represented by a series of military, repressive governments, tied with those extremely-damaging colonial tropes.
This deliberate choice of freely talking about ‘loss and love’ in a poetic form, with also a subtle political twist in the mix was something not just appealing to my ears, but to an entire generation of Brazilian young people, that felt left behind….
Mas eu não vou chorar
Eu vou é cantar
Pois a vida continua
Pois a vida continua
E eu não ficar sozinho no meio da rua
No meio da rua
Esperando que alguém me dê a mão
Me dê a mão, a mão
