"Viewed one at a time, [these objects] are fragments of lives. Together, they paint a portrait of a country that, we’ve been told, does not exist,” says Matt Black.
In American Artifacts, Black showcases over 3,000 objects collected during the creation of his previous book, American Geography, from 2014 to 2020, alongside transcripts of his conversations with locals, quotes and notebook entries.
Published by Thames & Hudson, the book expands on Black’s exploration of the myth of the “American Dream," bringing front and center the voices of the people he met during the project. “I began to ask, how many other places are a part of the geography of America, but not part of this American dream?” he explains.

“I’ve always understood a place through the relationship that people have with animals. They’re always seeking each other out, maybe because of a kind of loneliness where there’s a longing for touch,” says Sohrab Hura.
Drawing inspiration from the theater of the nighttime, as well as his fascination with animals and our relationships with them, Hura presents two images from his multidisciplinary practice: a photo from his 2015 series, Life Is Elsewhere, and a brightly-colored gouache painting, both of which pay homage to cats.

We are also thrilled to partner with the esteemed Magnum organization, showcasing solidarity within the photographic community and celebrating the tireless efforts of photographers who document the incredible world around us," says Randy Olson, founder of The Photo Society.
Curated in collaboration with The Photo Society, the collection captures not only a diverse range of places but also a vibrant spectrum of thematic interpretations.

“I wanted to choose two images that I could add to,” says Jim Goldberg. “A lot of times my process is an additive process — where I take the photograph and then I collage it, or I draw on it, or add text on it… these were images that I could do that with.”
Working from his California studio, Goldberg reimagines and enhances two images from his series Coming and Going through his unique practice of experimental play. The two posters show his hands-on process and provide deeper insight into his personal evolution, vulnerability, and artistry.
Signature Drop #002: Jim Goldberg launches this Friday, September 20 at 9 AM EST for three days only.

“I put all these images next to each other because without one another, this portrait of a girl smelling a rose would not be whole," says Newsha Tavakolian. "All of them, next to each other, the awareness, the anger, the consciousness — together they can describe a girl smelling a rose, not only a single image.”
Upon rediscovering her image Girl Smelling a Rose nearly three decades after its creation, Tavakolian embarked on a series of chemical experiments, using it as a rich starting point for creative revision and evolution. The resulting five images represent a journey of hope and transformation, seeing her subject take on new agency throughout the process.
Signature Drop #001: Newsha Tavakolian launches this Friday at 9AM EST.

Signature Drop: Newsha Tavakolian | Magnum Photos
“The whole concept, the whole project didn’t happen overnight,” said Newsha Tavakolian of Girl Smelling a Rose, an image from her archive retrospectively reinterpreted through the use of chemical processing. "I had to sit on it and I had to think about it, and it was amazing for me because the girl smelling a rose changed as I was changing myself.”
Through Tavakolian’s exploration of this process, the interplay between past and present emerges, mirroring her perspective shift from external observation toward self-reflection and yielding a succession of altered images that urges viewers to look again.
Girl Smelling a Rose features as the first Signature Drop, a new quarterly-released, time-limited and hand-finished sale with Magnum photographers, set to take place this Friday for 72 hours only.

In this clip, De Middel walks viewers through her method of pre-visualising work by translating ideas to sketches, and how this was channeled to create images for her series Journey to the Center.
