You enter as an outsider, but you quickly feel part of something,” says Enri Canaj. “As a photographer, I’m drawn to those moments when this atmosphere becomes visible: a gesture, a laugh, or two strangers sharing a drink.”

In partnership with Heineken, Europe’s Living Room is a journey through bars in 11 European countries, and their role as hubs for social connection. Today, in an era of online interactions, these venues are perhaps more crucial for communities than ever before.

Whether it be a cozy Victorian heritage pub in Dublin photographed by Canaj, or a welcoming bruin café in the Netherlands captured by Bieke Depoorter, their function remains the same: a space to uphold the ritual of bringing people together.

The Eternal City 🇮🇹

“What do I want to say in my photos of Rome? I am looking for tradition, […] where we came from and where we are going, not as in the modern Western world where we’re always in the present, and we’ve misplaced ourselves,” wrote Leonard Freed in his journal.

A haven for Magnum photographers in the postwar years, Rome is an ever-inspiring stage for life’s theater, where ritual and surprise are inseparable.

As a student in Switzerland in the early 1960s, Bruno Barbey drove to Italy to “capture the spirit of the nation.” His book The Italians (2002) takes inspiration from Italian cinema, while Freed’s own book The Italians (2011) features Rome's animated streets depicted across 45 trips to Italy in his lifetime.

In 2005, Paolo Pellegrin photographed quiet moments with mourners at the Vatican for the wake of Pope John-Paul II.

Published in 2023 by Aperture, What’s Ours centers around the 2019 revolution in Lebanon, documenting a decade of turmoil alongside moments of tenderness, freedom, intimacy, and vulnerability.

“Memleket grew out of a need to look for something different,” writes Emin Ózmen on his upcoming photobook, now available to pre-order via his Kickstarter campaign.

Özmen, whose debut photobook Olay traced ten years of tumult in Turkey, now turns his lens away from breaking news and towards the poetry of the everyday. The photographs, spanning 15 years of travels through the more rural parts of his homeland, show moments of togetherness, joy, and community, as well as softer moments of solitude and landscapes, steeped in tradition.

“It became a way of reconnecting with something more personal and familiar: with people, places, memories, and with myself. Each journey became almost a form of therapy, a way of finding my way back,” he writes.

Memleket is a self-published photobook, due to be released this fall.

On assignment for The New York Times, Chien-Chi Chang documents a growing civil defense movement in Taiwan against China’s intensifying military maneuvers and "cognitive warfare."

As Chinese President Xi Jinping meets President Trump this week, talks are expected to include Taiwan, where thousands of civilians have been engaging in disaster training in the event of a Chinese invasion, or what Xi Jinping calls a “historic mission” to unify the island with mainland China.

Chang captures flares illuminating the dark during nighttime drills on the southeast coast, and combat scenarios being played out in central Taiwan, reflecting President Lai Ching-te’s policy of ‘‘whole of society’’ defense.

Remembering Ian Berry 🕊️

For 65 years, Berry's photography has made a vital contribution to modern photojournalism.

Born in Lancashire, England, in 1934, Berry began his career in South Africa. He was the only photographer to document the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. After joining Magnum in 1962, he was the only known foreign photographer to cover the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Prague, and in the 1980s, he documented Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

From his portrait of English life in the 1960s-70s to his long-term documentation on how water shapes our lives, Berry’s deep interest in humanity resonates across decades of work. As Magnum's longest-serving member, he leaves behind an immense photographic legacy and will be greatly missed.

“We are very sad to hear of Ian Berry’s passing,” reads a statement from Magnum Co-Presidents Newsha Tavakolian, Gregory Halpern and Lorenzo Meloni. “Ian was part of Magnum for more than six decades, and his work showed the power and responsibility of photography. He documented difficult political events, but he never lost sight of the people living through them. His photographs mattered because he stayed close to people and did not look away."

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of beloved Magnum photographer Ian Berry.

He died on Sunday, September 13, aged 92, following a short but aggressive illness.

In the coming days, we will pay tribute to Berry's life and legacy.

“It was such a beautiful morning. There was no cloud in the sky, and suddenly everything went dark,” said Steve McCurry, recounting the moment he watched the World Trade Center go up in smoke from his roof 25 years ago on September 11, 2001.

About a dozen Magnum photographers, including Susan Meiselas, Larry Towell, Alex Webb and Eli Reed, recorded what unfolded that day — survivors covered in ash wading through a sea of rubble, exhausted firefighters attempting the impossible.

For Peter van Agtmael, the event was both a historical and personal shift — in the decades that followed, he went on to document the realities of America's post-9/11 wars. Photographs of attacks and the aftermath have the ability to shape the way the event is remembered. As McCurry reiterated, “It burns into your memory. It’s something you can’t forget.”

Presenting Get Started in Photography, a free online course from Magnum Photos and MPB 🎥

Led by photographer and educator Daniel T. Wheeler with the help of Cristina de Middel and Rafał Milach, Get Started in Photography introduces the fundamentals of photography, including camera basics and equipment, style and composition, editing, storytelling, and beyond.

Each lesson applies photographs from the Magnum archive as learning tools, featuring images from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Susan Meiselas, Alex Webb and many more, alongside footage of the instructors at work and discussing their practices.

The course combines easy-to-understand technical instruction with creative applications, and several chapters also include a workbook to put new skills into practice along the way. Students will learn how to use a camera, previsualize their images, develop a project, and embrace the mistakes essential to making work and crystallizing their voice.

“I think it’s probably important to learn the rules before we break them, right?” asks Wheeler.
