Upcoming in Paris

LBF Contemporary is pleased to announce ‘Pour aujourd’hui et pour l’avenir,’ an exhibition bringing together an intimate work on paper by Pierre Bonnard with new paintings by Caroline Absher and Annice Fell, made in direct response to his work. Across generations, the three share a belief in colour as a carrier of feeling and memory.

In October 1947, the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris held a major posthumous Bonnard exhibition. Soon after, Christian Zervos’s lead article in Cahiers d’Art asked, “Pierre Bonnard est-il un grand peintre?” (Is Pierre Bonnard a great painter?), dismissing him as the last and weakest heir to Impressionism. When Matisse came across the issue, he wrote furiously in the margin: “Oui! Je certifie que Pierre Bonnard est un grand peintre pour aujourd’hui et sûrement pour l’avenir.” (Yes! I can attest that Pierre Bonnard is a great painter for today and certainly for the future).

Nearly eighty years later, in the same city, the exhibition considers how that legacy persists in the practice of a younger generation. In their new paintings, Absher and Fell take up Bonnard’s saturated palette, his figures absorbed into their surroundings, and his densely worked, all-over surfaces, carrying these concerns into the present.

Lawrence Perry’s “Careless Rapture” brings together eight new paintings for his second solo show with LBF Contemporary. Perry works from photography and starts by using grisaille, a monochrome method used by old masters, before layering colour over it, juxtaposing the past with an accelerated present. The work takes historic subjects, gestures and details as seen through a contemporary lens, capturing remembered moments. From smaller-scale crops of hands and necklaces to larger landscapes, the series explores the experience of nostalgia.
