One day to go! We're so excited to share The Folk Effect film with you all tomorrow, featuring 6 brand-new songs by Ríoghnach Connolly, Kate in the Kettle, Ellie Gowers, Lisa Knapp, Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Jackie Oates! All 6 artists have put their hearts and souls into what they've created, and the finished film is something very special indeed.

The Folk Effect returns on 16 June at 7pm featuring Ríoghnach Connolly, Kate Young, Ellie Gowers, Lisa Knapp, Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Jackie Oates.

With just one week to go until The Folk Effect showcase, it's time to have a peek at the traditional song we're using as our starting point!

We discovered 'Tonight I Shall Sleep Lightly' in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library with thanks to EFDSS, and this brilliant archive recording was provided by The British Library. It is sung in Scots Gaelic, which was translated by our first artist, Ríoghnach Connolly.

Based on this archive recording, a new version of the song was recorded by our very own Musical Director, Jonathan Ip. This then kickstarted the chain for 6 brand-new songs to be created!

Ondervinden takes familiar, traditional stories and twist them into wild and unfamiliar shapes, looking at them from perspectives that are female focussed, often forgotten and always fresh.

We are a female led company; running exploratory workshops and theatre productions that serve as a platform for female-identifying artists and creators of the world.

Started by Lucy Morris and Elske Waite in 2018, Ondervinden is currently touring its first show ‘Tess’ to rural villages of the South West.

‘Tess’ was test-run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2019, to great critical acclaim, alongside ‘Shiver’, created in collaboration with actress Polly Waldron (a ‘gem-like show’ The Scotsman).
