Jaspreet Singh Boparai is a classicist. He is a Senior Fellow of the Pharos Foundation and a contributing editor at The Lamp. He is currently writing a book on Classics in British India.

The anxieties around the decline of reading and literacy paradoxically give rise to outsized fantasies of the power of reading.

In this, the final part of "Out of Print", Edmund King reflects on bibliotherapy and some of the symposium's highlights. As humanists feel increasingly under threat in the institutions, they attribute to reading (particularly the reading of fiction) miraculous and healing powers.

Joshua Knapp grew up in the north of England. After university, he taught religion in schools in London before heading north again. He now lives in West Yorkshire and works in public transport.

"The Haxton Review" is his first novel, although he has written for church newspapers and transport magazines. He enjoys reading and walking on the hills. He doesn’t have any kids or pets. He did recently own a cactus but it died due to his neglect.

What if the problem of literacy is not its decline, but rather our hyper-literate state? The written word has become a bulwark against experience, with the reading of social media posts or Substack essays is at best a distraction.

In this, the third part of "Out of Print" — Verdurin's symposium on literacy held in June 2026 and organised with Edmund King — Kit Wilson explores the confusion of the ‘map’ with the ‘territory’ that occludes access to an understanding of things outside of language itself.

Edward McLaren is a third year DPhil candidate at the University of Oxford studying Jane Austen and gentry blood myths. He is the author of Bothelford’s Gone, a novel about the grooming gangs in twenty-first-century Britain.
