Somatic Acting Process

Somatic Acting Process This page aims to keep you up to date with all the activities related to Somatic Acting Process®.

Somatic Acting Process® (SAP®) is a new movement-based acting process emerged from the integration of my experience as an actress, somatic practitioner and researcher. It is part of my ongoing acting explorations for over a decade. The practice was formally shaped through a Practice-as-Research PhD at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama while teaching the process in UK-based actor-training in

stitutions. SAP® is situated among various modern practices that support the contemporary actor's embodied experience. My contribution to this actor-training field suggests an original integration between acting and somatic movement practices inspired by principles of Body-Mind Centering® (BMC®) and Authentic Movement. It is an ongoing and open process that is dynamically shaped in relation to the actors. My aim as somatic trainer-witness is to hold each individual actor's creativity and expression, while supporting the understanding of acting as emergent interrelation between mind and body, inner and outer, self and other/others. In addition to this necessary embodied perception, I invite the modern actor to find self-support and awareness through playfulness and relational explorations. A few words about me:
I am an actress, somatic acting/movement educator and researcher with an ongoing experience in acting since 2005. I am a Greek National Theatre Drama School/East 15 Acting School alumni and a certified somatic movement educator (Cert IBMT) based on principles of Body-Mind Centering®, Authentic Movement and Somatic Psychology. I currently teach actors and supervise Postgraduate Research candidates as a full-time Lecturer at East 15 Acting School in London. My latest performing experience focuses on research-based and socially-inspired projects.

"Mapping Journeys - Grounding Roots" is a participatory performance that invites audiences to reflect on migration, refuge, identity and belonging through shared stories and gentle interaction.

An original work, born from a long artistic journey of discoveries and encounters, inviting you to listen differently.

The piece is presented as part of Refugee Week festival, based on the ongoing collaboration between The Hellenic Centre and Counterpoints Arts.

There is something about keeping up with all aspects of a practice, including sharing it more widely on social media.

There is also something about the Winter Solstice and the spirit of these days that made me want to come back here and share.

So today I’m offering the “map” toward embodiment in , as I also share it with my acting students.

Simple steps.
Nothing is fixed.
Follow the order that arises organically for you in each practice, study, creative process, or rehearsal.

My only suggestions:

If you are truly interested in embodiment, dwell in the transition between physicalization and somatization.
This is where there are no gaps between your body and mind through breath, imagination, and the senses.
Attending to "how you move" and "what moves you".

Do not skip reflection.
It is the glue that brings you back to creation.

Inspired by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen’s process of embodiment in Body-Mind Centering, and based on my ongoing research in the acting craft and embodied practices over the past two decades.

As always, I hope it resonates with where you are.

Until the next sharing,
Happy Winter Solstice, and smooth transitions towards the light ✨

Very much looking forward to facilitating a workshop for the Sadler's Wells Culture Club this coming Friday 19 September at 2pm.

It seems that the session is sold out but, according to the website: "There will be a limited number of tickets available on the day, offered on a first come first serve basis. We recommend arriving early to avoid disappointment".

Another very significant aspect of Somatic Acting Process is to create and hold space for other practitioners to share their expertise on embodiment in performing arts, to exchange and discuss our perspectives.

On Wednesday July 9, this practitioner was the exceptional Rajashree Warrier who visited and took us through a journey on the craft of gesturing, movement, rhythm and interaction in

Grateful 🙏🏼

A very significant aspect of Somatic Acting Process is its ongoing engagement with and contribution to formal research on embodiment within the context of Artistic Research or Practice Research.

On Friday May 9 I had the privilege and honour of sharing my Artistic Research on Touch at the International Conference of Artistic Research in Porto on the theme of Resonance.

What you see in the pictures is me "meeting" the active participants as co-players through the opening contact of a high five. Just the meeting contact using

our hands as source of contact
our palms as points of contact
zero pressure
active stillness as part of tactile movement
contact with the space and the other

what you don't see

is that this meeting came after preparation on self-directed touch unpacking individually these five principles

what you don't hear

is that as I meet the active participants a voice recording by Anita Chari on receptive and somatic resonance plays. Part of my ongoing investigations into bringing together embodied experiencing and embodied thinking.

The recording plays through our touch, if we touch. Because I like bridging experimentation with haptic gadgets and conductive materials. And is there any more vibrant conductive vessel than our own bodies?

This phase was also followed by invitations towards full-body engagement based on the cyclical sequencing: I touch-I move-I sound-I speak.

I'm grateful

to the peer reviewers and the one who wrote: "I consider this proposal to be innovative. It proposes an important personal and innovative path for reflection on artistic research".

to all the participants and the one who shared: "it created an orchestra of sensation; connecting with the other in sound, movement, meaning making. Collaboration with complete autonomy".

to Paulo Luis Almeida, organiser of the conference at the University of Porto and moderator for my sharing.

to Marina Didier from the Research Institute in Art, Design and Society for sharing her excitement for my contribution and for taking the pictures.

to Anita Chari for the recording and for being in the room with us

Let's see what resonates next...

As a much-needed break is closely approaching, a sharing of a principle that always accompanies my work with actors in training and creative practice seems apt!

A state of restful activity is not always easy, especially when "external noise" disrupts the process, but it is an ongoing destination nonetheless.

Wishing each and every single one of you who visits this page a plethora of restful and joyful activities!

This "magic" moment of realising we do not have to force ourselves into an expected or imposed state of activity.

So precious to witness the transformation when it arises.
