One of the English folk scene’s great all-rounders, a compelling singer and an outstanding multi-instrumentalist on squeezeboxes and strings. Brian is one of the country’s best anglo-concertina players, is just as good on melodeon, and plays guitar to a high standard, recently adding banjo to his act. Well known for towering renditions of Child Ballads and other songs from the English tradition, Brian adds beautifully-played squeezebox instrumentals to a repertoire full of variety, fire and humour. He also has a deep knowledge of the history behind the old songs.

Come all ye down to Cecil Sharp House on Tuesday for our Coming Home theme night. Come and join us!

Brian Peters is our guest on the 22nd. If you haven't heard him before (and indeed, even if you have!), Brian Peters is one of the English folk scene’s great all-rounders, a compelling singer and an outstanding multi-instrumentalist on squeezeboxes and strings. The cleaned-up recording of
Clive Woolf from 1974, as mentioned in the recent interview with him in Folk
London, is now out on Bandcamp:

This version has been lovingly restored by Bex Woolf over the
last couple of months.

Live at Dingle’s is the first opportunity to hear Clive Woolf in his
heyday since a brain illness in 1974, just weeks after this recording
was made, ended his burgeoning professional career at the age of 28.

Clive, a regular at Sharp’s Folk Club from shortly after its inception
until the Covid lockdowns, was a much-admired singer and guitarist who
performed solo, with Dick Gaughan in the short-lived Firewater, and with
the electric folk quartet Spencer’s Feat.

His illness left him unable to play guitar and he retired from
performing professionally. Solo recordings that he made with Bill Leader
were never released, and until now his playing could only be heard on
Rosemary Hardman’s Firebird (1972) and Sweet William’s Ghost by George
Deacon & Marion Ross (1973).

This is a digitised and cleaned-up version of a tape recording made by
Richard Mellish on 9 January 1974 at Dingle’s Folk Club at the Adams
Arms on Conway Street, central London.
