𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘒 π˜‰π˜π˜Άπ˜³, Bill Armstrong's in-depth monograph is published by ORO Edition.
Armstrong’s 𝘐𝘯𝘧π˜ͺ𝘯π˜ͺ𝘡𝘺 series is an extensive body of work photographed since 1997. It includes a wide range of portfolios, from figurative to abstract, which are made using a unique process of photographing found images with the camera’s focusing ring set at infinity. This is the first time that the complete 𝘐𝘯𝘧π˜ͺ𝘯π˜ͺ𝘡𝘺 series has been seen together.

The book is now available to pre-order online in the UK and available for purchase in the US.

HackelBury began to represent Bill Armstrong in 2010.

Created using hand-coated papers, photographic fragments, adhesive, varnish, wax and pigment, the works resist classification.

Photographs dissolve into paintings taking on the presence of sculptural objects. Their surfaces recall the carved and inked textures of Japanese woodcuts, particularly those rooted in Buddhist print traditions.

The Starns draw on this spirit through their own layered process, where images are assembled, erased and remade, interrupting detail, smoothing tonal range, scraping away form, until what remains is an image which is felt as much as seen.

HackelBury is open today until 17:00.

National Academy of Sciences in DC has a group exhibition up through May next year.
β€œOne does not photograph something simply for β€˜what it is’, but β€˜for what else it is’” - Minor White Drawing from the art collection of the National Academy of Sciences, this exhibition explores how metaphors can be powerful tools for discovery, and help us see the familiar in unfamiliar ways, spark insight and open doors to new ways of thinking.
Unfortunately the building is closed to the public, but you can contact them for a private tour possibly.

Bill Armstrong’s 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘦 #65 (1998–2004), found a new home this week!

This body of work is part of Armstrong’s ongoing investigation into perception and the photographic image, created through a unique process of shooting out-of-focus photographs to produce a soft, painterly effect.

In 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘦 #65, the blurred contours invite the viewer to consider not only the subject, but the space between clarity and ambiguity. The work resists easy interpretation, encouraging a slower, more reflective form of looking.

We are excited to be showing work by Oli Kellett who will be exhibiting work from his series 𝘚𝘰𝘒𝘱 π˜‹π˜³π˜’π˜Έπ˜ͺ𝘯𝘨𝘴.

𝘚𝘰𝘒𝘱 π˜‹π˜³π˜’π˜Έπ˜ͺ𝘯𝘨𝘴 is Kellett’s daily drawing practice documenting a bar of soap on a soap dish, and recording the minute day-to-day changes as it gets smaller until eventually disappears. Once gone, the process begins again with a different soap on a different soap dish.

Inspired by artists On Karawa, Peter Dreher, Hanne Darboven and Roman Opalka, this exercise is an observation into time passing and how repetition, ritual and discipline can shape a life. Kellett is interested in humanity and the cycle of life and his work has a strongly meditative element to it, inspired by his own interest in Eastern religions and spirituality.

The jury says: β€ž [π˜”π˜°π˜΅π˜©π˜¦π˜³ 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘒 is] a cinematic work crafted with sensitivity, which respectfully and gradually introduces us to a woman whose complex life decisions, capable of profoundly changing her, are shared with us through the essential elements of cinema: light, sound, time, and space, achieving a delicate balance between form and content, aesthetics and substance.”

To hear more about Alys’s practice, listen to her interview with The Idle Hands Society podcast. The episode explores how Alys gained access to film this intimate portrait and fostered the trust necessary for its creation. Additionally, she shares insights into her process for selecting subjects for her portraiture (link in bio)

Join us this Friday: 18:30-20:00 for a live discussion between Bill Armstrong (), Brian Dillon () and Edward Dimsdale () about his current exhibition, "Light Form"

RSVP using link in bio

Renowned for his iconic Infinity series, Armstrong intentionally blurs photographs by adjusting the camera’s focusing ring to infinity, creating ethereal and dreamlike images. Light Form further explores his fascination with impermanence and abstraction, pushing the boundaries of his medium to create otherworldly compositions which encourage viewers to contemplate their own reality.

Bill Armstrong is an American photographer based in New York. His photographic work, characterised by the use of colour and blending, finds in the human figure and in classical Greek and Roman art an important source of inspiration.

Brian Dillon is an Irish writer based in London. His books include Affinities, Suppose a Sentence, Essayism and In the Dark Room. His essays and criticism have appeared in frieze, Art Review, The New Yorker, The Guardian, the London Review of Books and the New York Times.

Edward Dimsdale is a British writer and professor based in Cambridge. He is a Professor of Art & Contemporary Visual Culture and Head of the Cambridge School of Visual Arts and Performing Arts Graduate School.
