HANG ON TO YOUR SEATS
Our concert on 4th July is going to be popular. It features a rarely-performed solo for trombone and is your chance to see how this instrument can show it's sensitive and triumphant side. You'll be impressed, the trombone can do so much more than that horrid, comic, slidey stuff we all expect when someone walks into the room holding one.
Not only that, but we're tackling one of the hardest symphonies in the repertoire. It starts quietly, then gets louder, then gets louder and then gets louder again. A knock-out work that will ensure you finish the evening on a high!

THIS IS WHAT TRIUMPH FEELS LIKE
Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony starts out quietly with a theme representing fate knocking at the door. Pretty soon, it becomes one of the loudest, most exciting pieces of music in the orchestral repertoire. It's pretty difficult to play, which is why it isn't performed too often. If you want to experience this thrilling roller coaster ride for yourself, get your tickets for our concert at 7.30pm on 4th July at St. Andrew's Church, Southgate N14 5PP – visit: https://wegottickets.com/f/18590

TRIUMPH IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY
Romantic composers reacted against the rational, balanced enlightenment era by emphasising the supreme importance of the individual will. A "fate theme" allowed them to pit the lone human against an uncontrollable, divine, or destructive cosmic force. Tchaikovsky made full use of this concept for his 5th symphony. It starts with a glimmer of hope against despair then takes us through one of the most memorable tunes in classical music – eventually emerging in a victorious finale. Hold on to your seats and come with us on this amazing journey at our next concert on 4th July.

HOPING TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY
Nowadays, the music industry is notoriously difficult to break into. A career as a composer is not an easy way to make a fortune. It was like that in 1812 too – that's the year a young Franz Schubert penned his Overture in D (No.26). He was only 15 years old and still a student at the Stadtkonvikt Imperial Seminary in Vienna. This is a rarely-performed work and worth listening to. Why not buy tickets for our Concert Of Hope on 4th July and you can hear it for yourself?

TOP BRASS
Since our new conductor joined, Southgate Symphony Orchestra has gone from strength to strength. We're getting bigger and we'd really like to be known for playing famous works for larger orchestra. To do this, we need to beef up our brass section – looking for a 1st trumpet, a few trombones and even a lonely tuba who wants to be part of a growing group of friendly musicians. Find out more about us, go visit our website and fill in the contact form to get in touch.

CAMPAIGN TO RECOGNISE THE TROMBONE
In 1837, Ferdinand David composed his Concertino For Trombone – it was hoped it would show that the instrument was versatile and sensitive enough to be accepted as a proper addition to the orchestra. The first performance was conducted by none other than Mendelssohn and was an immediate success.
It's pretty difficult to play.
Our soloist Pau Hernández Santamaria is going to show you just how it's done at our concert on 4th July. You had better book tickets to make up your mind about it for yourself!

BRAVE SOLOIST ANNOUNCED FOR 4TH JULY!
Our next concert features Ferdinand David's Concertino for Trombone. It's a tricky piece to play and is often sprung on auditioning trombone players to see what they're made of.
Our performance will feature Pau Hernández Santamaria – born in Catarroja (Spain) in 2001, he moved to the UK in 2019 to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music with Honours in 2023 and a Master of Performance in 2025.

NEWLY-HATCHED!
In celebration of Spring, we're proud to feature Jamie King, currently studying postgraduate bassoon at The Royal College of Music. Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo isn't performed very often (mainly because it is so difficult to play). So you can get a chance to hear this spectacular solo for the first time.
Our young conductor, Sam Scheer, has also recently joined the orchestra – SSO is really helping to support emerging talent in the north London classical music scene. You can show your support too, by grabbing some tickets before they sell out!
