How sad to hear of the death of this legend, who sang in our famous concert in Westminster Abbey. Her talent and gracious spirit will be much missed.

All of us at BBC Radio 3 are very sad to hear of the death of the inimitable and much-loved British soprano Dame Felicity Lott, who died last night at the age of 79.

Dame Felicity — affectionately known across the industry and, indeed, around the world, as 'Flott' — was born in Cheltenham in 1947, studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and had a glittering career in the fields of both opera and song. She appeared on Radio 3 many times over the last five decades and will be much missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.

Just a few weeks ago, Dame Felicity spoke to Radio 4’s John Wilson for his celebrated programme, This Cultural Life. The episode was first broadcast last Thursday and, according to Dame Felicity's manager, she very much enjoyed it and was delighted to have appeared on what was one of her favourite radio programmes.

Rest in peace, Flott — and thank you for your remarkable artistry.

Congratulations to Charlotte Jane Kennedy, winner of the 2026 Peter Hulsen Orchestral Song Award! 🎶

Established in 2008, the Peter Hulsen Orchestral Song Award is a biennial competition for outstanding young singers at the start of their professional careers. The award is named after the late Peter Hulsen, a devoted music lover and longstanding supporter of Sinfonia Smith Square.

Charlotte is the 9th recipient of the award, selected by an esteemed panel of judges including soprano Sophie Bevan MBE, bass-baritone Neal Davies, and Sinfonia Smith Square Founder Director Simon Over.

Join us on 4 June at Smith Square Hall where Charlotte, and second prizewinner Miranda Kettlewell, will perform live with Sinfonia Smith Square:
