Bailes + Light

Bailes + Light Immersive designers and creative technologists led by light. We collaborate with designers of immersive experiences, artists, space makers and storytellers.

Benji Bailes and Dan Light have been curating spellbinding experiences through light, sound, and interactive technology for over 20 years. As a creative technology company we create bespoke lighting installations, multisensory immersive experiences that encourage audience participation and find innovative ways to link the digital and analogue world. We take wild ideas and turn them into a reality!

Benji and Dan are accomplished lighting designers who initially came together with new ideas to light immersive theatre experiences. Benji has worked across the lighting industry, with wide ranging experience from television shows to concerts. Dan’s engineering background has meant years spent repairing and inventing things. He makes lighting fixtures to fit a concept where off-the-shelf solutions do not exist. We have a planet-first design ethos and the skills that allow that ethos to enhance rather than compromise design. We explore new ways to shift audiences into participants and we’re never afraid to invent new technologies to achieve our objectives. Finally, we have a real desire to work closely with artists and designers to accomplish a shared vision.

Props to our year!

Our workshop has been busy crafting for theatre and TV. This anti-matter raygun, made in collaboration with is a particular highlight.

For the West End production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Propworks approached us to develop a neat and nimble electronics solution for their raygun prop.

We designed and 3D printed the body and trigger mechanism and installed a blue LED bulb - surprisingly hard to find to fit the required specifications. Great Scott!

We've been working with architects to support the reclamation of public space in Camden, using light and technology to bring a new civic square to life. SubSTRATUM, developed by Edgy Collective and LINDA as part of the a living installation transforming the high street in Camden. We designed and fabricated two light fixtures, based on floating marine buoys, to brighten the new seating areas and surrounding planters. Each lantern runs from its own solar panel, making the entire installation off-grid, yet the efficient LED lighting is still able to work in the depths of Winter when days are dark. Our fixtures are seated atop two handmade bee hotels by we're very proud to be a part of the creation of this public artwork!

Highlighting another of our past projects as COP30 concludes in Brazil:

A collaboration between , AlchemyVR and , 'Munduruku: The Fight to Defend the Heart of the Amazon Rainforest' is a multi-sensory virtual reality film about the Munduruku people of the Amazon River Basin. The film was made to raise awareness of the threats faced by the Munduruku, whose ancestral land has been under attack from large-scale infrastructure projects such as hydroelectric dam building.

We developed the technology behind the sensory effects that would allow the audience to physically feel the environment depicted in the film.

'Munduruku' has been displayed at the Centro Cultural Correios, Sao Paulo, at Glastonbury Festival, and won the Alternate Realities Award at Sheffield adoc Festival 2017, and Best Social Impact VR at Raindance Film Festival 2017. Since the release of the film, the official demarcation of the Munduruku people's territory took place in September 2024, marking a historic and symbolic victory for the community.

Our lighting design for Little Mermaid (2021) , an immersive staging of the classic fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. Staged in an unusual location in Hoxton, this musical theatre experience was one of the first to encourage audiences back out after lockdown.

We were tasked with (underwater!) world-building with light to complement the set design, using a combination of water projectors and practical fixtures developed in our workshop. You can read the full write up on our website, via the link in our bio.

As the COP30 UN climate talks begin in Brazil we are reminded of our collaboration with orchestra and , an immersive orchestral performance at the highlighting the impact of climate change in the Welsh coastal town of Fairbourne.

Following heavy storms and tidal surges in 2014, Gwynedd County Council controversially announced it would no longer repair Fairbourne's flood defences, and with the projected rise in sea levels, the village will no longer be inhabitable from 2054. Forecast to be the UK's first climate refugees, Fairbourne's residents reject the decision that their village "isn't worth saving".

This important performance was designed to raise awareness and to resist both the threat of the rising seas and the apathy of the state towards people's lives in the face of climate change.

We specialise in designing and building interactive systems behind sensory and immersive experiences. By combining sensing, mapping, and tracking technologies, we build memorable journeys that captivate audiences.

We design and prototype our projects in-house with our OSCHII technology, a system that makes it easy to connect physical inputs with digital outputs, taking care of the technical side of things allowing artists and designers to focus on the creative.

Did you know we also do set and studio lighting? Here's some work we did earlier this summer at the new podcast studio at in East London.

We had fun installing some new types of LED tape, and also installed a control system allowing users of the space to choose from the whole spectrum of colours for their shoot or session.
