Incredibly, the genius that is Innerstrings has now made 50 videos for Sonic Cathedral releases. Here, he counts down his Top 10.
10 - Chapterhouse - ‘See That Girl’
“If you’d told 19-year-old me that I’d be making a video for Chapterhouse 35 years later, I might not have given away all my original T-shirts, dammit. The video is inspired by the Joy Division ’Shadowplay’ footage, but with an appropriately lysergic flavour.”
9 - Andy Bell - ‘Apple Green UFO’
“A video made from a whole lot of things that probably don’t belong together, but ultimately things that Andy would like to show to a curious space traveller. Possibly my most ADHD video to date.”
8 - XAM Duo - ‘Blue Comet’
“A video that still warms my bones with its spring blossom optimism and bouncy synth motifs.”
7 - Three Quarter Skies - ‘On Fire’
“Most of this was filmed in a shed in Portslade which housed an obscene amount of pinball machines. How many music videos have ever been filmed in Portslade?”
6 - Whitelands - ‘The Prophet & I’
“Years of oversaturated video content made me crave a black and white video. Whitelands specifically asked for a black and white video filmed in a white room. They were such a fun band to work for, I loved their energy.”
5 – bdrmm - ‘Three’
“Filmed at half speed while my friend Jess sang the song at twice the speed, I still love this video, and I still think it’s one of the band’s best songs… it still has me in bits.”
4 - deary - ‘Fairground’
“The word which first came to mind when hearing this was ‘swoon’. Filmed on the Southbank one bitterly cold Sunday afternoon, the key to this video is the red beret that I bought for Dottie to wear. It was the first time that I had met deary; we were getting drunk in a bar by sunset.”
3 – Sister Ray Davies - ‘Aidan’
“I couldn’t film a trilogy of videos about Holy Island without going to Holy Island. What a magical place; I had the best day! The opening chords to ‘Aidan’ take me straight back there.”
2 - Andy Bell - ‘Love Comes In Waves’
“Everything changed for Innerstrings after this. Andy very clearly said, ‘I’m going to wear my fighter pilot helmet and a poncho, and we’re going to film it on Hampstead Heath at sunrise’. We had such fun filming this and were in a cafe by 9am.”
1 - Cheval Sombre - ‘It’s Not Time’
“A simple, but deeply emotional video for myself and Nat. Filmed during sunrise in Lewes and sunset in Plumpton on 5th November 2020, it reminds me of Sussex during the pandemic with its absence of humans and fireworks. The sunset footage was filmed where my parents’ ashes are scattered. While I was filming this, Nat was attending his mother’s funeral, watching the same sunset.”
