Siobhan Davies Studios is an artist-led organisation that advocates for dance and choreography as uniquely positioned for artistic and social change. We connect artists, neighbours, and audiences through investigative, collaborative, and creative activities at our Studios in South London and beyond. Founded in 1988 by pioneering choreographer Siobhan Davies, the organisation has been housed in its RIBA award-winning studios since 2006 and under the co-Artistic Directorship of Annie Pui Ling Lok and Kat Bridge as of 2021.

🧡 LANGUAGE and POWER were the first two in our rotating series of community performance projects – LANGUAGE, POWER, FEAR, EMOTION – made in Elephant and Castle.

🎉 We are screening all four performances this Saturday, along with five movement workshops facilitated by the project's leading artists.

📹 Sharing a short clip from the rehearsals and performance of FEAR. Directed by SDS Co-Artistic Director Annie Pui Ling Lok, Juan Ayala, Anne-Gaëlle Thiriot and Anna Alvarez, the piece was performed by 50 people with ties to the Elephant and Castle area—many of whom were taking the stage for the first time.

😱 In this project, we explored the fear of the unknown, the fear of our space or comfort being threatened, and how fear can control us. Together we explored how we can challenge fear through support and trust in one another.

👀 Watch the full performance on our LPFE Celebration this Saturday! We will be screening all performances of LANGUAGE / POWER / FEAR /EMOTION throughout the day.

💃🏽 Also, join the workshop with Anna Alvarez on the day! She will be teaching iconic tango moves from the FEAR project.

Meet our artist for the Living Image Chapter 2.

Introducing Subathra Subramaniam, Artistic Director and joint CEO of Akademi, a South Asian Dance organisation based in London. She is a choreographer and educator known for work that brings dance, culture and science together. Trained in the classical dance form Bharata Natyam, Subathra spent twenty years as artistic director of South Asian dance companies Angika and Sadhana Dance before joining Akademi.

Her choreography for theatres, festivals and outdoor spaces is developed through long-term collaborations with artists, scientists and academic institutions. She is a choreographer, movement director and a passionate educator. Her residencies include The Maudsley Hospital, University College London’s Environment Institute, The Place and Sura Medura, Sri Lanka.

As the former Co-Education Director of Cape Farewell, she co-led expeditions to the High Arctic and developed science and geography resources inspired by climate research. She regularly speaks at international conferences and is a trustee of South East Dance and Turtle Key Arts.

Her recent works include Surrender, Unkindest Cut, Under My Skin, Elixir and The Shiver.

🌟 Marking SDS’s 20th anniversary, this four-chapter project (July 2026 – July 2027) invites 20 artists to deconstruct, dismantle, and reclaim movement traditions in a project that dis/honours Siobhan Davies’ original work, challenging how dance history is archived and celebrated.

Returning this autumn LIVING IMAGE…

🌫️ For Chapter 2 of Living Image, Sheri King, Akeim Toussaint Buck, Subathra Subramaniam, Jules Cunningham and Charlie Morrissey are the five artists making work. Each artist will remake Siobhan Davies’s solo from her work Sphinx (1977) over five days, concluding in public performances on 5 & 6 November.

🙀 Unscary Saturdays are a series of inclusive dance classes at SDS - the aim is to dismantle the unhelpful pressures and sense of intimidation that can often be felt in dance spaces. Classes are open to all ages and abilities.

👚 It's Second Hand September! Update your Autumn wardrobe in a free and eco-friendly way with our Courtyard Clothing Swap on Eco-resourcing Day.

🍂 You do not need to bring anything in order to take part BUT if you have any clothing items that are in good condition and you no longer wear then please bring and add to the pile of things to swap!

🧡 Items that are leftover at the end of the event will be donated to two charities that support refugees: Care4Calais & Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers.

🔁 This event is for clothes only, feel free to bring good quality clothes, paired shoes, clothing accessories such as bags and belts of any size and for any age.
