A huge thank you to Karl Tearney
We’d like to acknowledge and thank SAA Head of Poetry, Karl Tearney, who has delivered poetry workshops with Soldiers’ Arts Academy and our sister organisations since 2017.
Over the years, Karl has helped create poets within our groups, nurturing their writing, encouraging their development and giving them the confidence to find and share their own voices.
Karl is now stepping back from his role with SAA, and we wanted to recognise the time, creativity and encouragement he has given to so many people over the years.
Thank you, Karl, for everything you have contributed to SAA and its creative community.

The changing season can feed creativity
As summer gives way to autumn, changing light, colours, sounds and atmosphere can become fuel for creativity.
Whatever your endeavour, take notice of what is changing around you. A shift in season can be a good opportunity to refresh your focus, explore something new and rededicate your creative energy.

This summer I was lucky enough to visit a little museum dedicated to the Croatian artist Vlaho Bukovac.
Seeing his work and learning more about his life was a reminder that the drive to create is a uniquely human need.
We observe, interpret, make and leave something behind. Our creations become part of our legacy, carrying something of how we saw and experienced the world into the future.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons we keep making art.

Travel can inspire creative flow.
Whether you're staying in the UK or travelling abroad, seeing new geography and different landscapes feeds your inner artist. New places naturally encourage us to look, notice and respond.
And you don't need to bring a full painting kit. Sketches, notes and simple observation can be enough to capture a place and fuel restorative insights.
This summer, a sketchbook in Croatia gave me plenty to look at, record and bring home.

You don't have to travel to look at new vistas.
Some of my own paintings are done close to home, simply by taking the time to really look at what is around me.
Practising looking at the ordinary, everyday world with new eyes can open up the creative process. A familiar view can become a new subject when we slow down, observe carefully and respond to what we see.
Creativity doesn't always require somewhere new. Sometimes it simply requires a different way of looking.

Summer activities can feed creative growth, whether that means travelling, exploring somewhere new, or simply enjoying a different rhythm closer to home.
As the season changes and we head towards autumn, it can be a good time to rededicate our creative energies. A change of season can bring a fresh perspective, renewed curiosity and the opportunity to pick up where we left off, or start something new.
At SAA, we believe creative practice is something to carry with us, wherever we are.

At Soldiers' Arts Academy, we use the arts to bring people together, build confidence and create opportunities for members of the Armed Forces community.

This year, we’re taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge and pledges close tomorrow.
