Hello, it’s been a while! A little update from us here at DDA…

Not sure how many of you have noticed but we have been quiet on here for some time now, so wanted to share with you why. We have made a decision in February to prioritise things that needed our most attention and so socials had to be logged out off and unfortunately most of our other comms suffered as well. So we’re now in a bit of a pickle because of the delays and are trying to get back on it, please do bear with us a little longer as we navigate a new phase of our lives and a new reality for our business.

The exciting news is that we have welcomed a new baby boy into our lives last weekend and are pleased to say both Zuzana and Jaxen are doing ok. Our son’s journey has not been without it’s challenges and so we are beyond relieved he’s finally earth side, healthy and very cute, even tho a little early and with a dramatic entry.

Zuzana’s high risk pregnancy brought on many hospital stays, tests and monitoring and restrictions due to high stress. The constant worry has taken over our minds which made it difficult to do much else with any effectiveness at all. Over Easter Zuzana’s dad also suffered a bad stroke and has a very long way to go to recovery. He was already weakened due to his emergency spinal surgeries over the last 12 months so this has been a constant distraction for a while now. He’s the only grandparent our son will have the pleasure to meet one day.

Running this business with only two people is challenging enough but when a few things go wrong on top of it then it can all misalign very quickly and the business suffers because of it - and our traders are unfortunately the ones getting the short end of the stick. And we are truly sorry about that. We cannot thank them enough for being patient and understanding and we wanted to publicly apologies for the lack of communication. We are working on it and everyone who hasn’t been contacted will be contacted over the next few days and weeks. Caption continued in comments! Business update.

We are back! 🥳 Shop is back open for all your gifting needs! Hope you’ve all had a lovely break and the start to the new year has been positive so far.

2025 has been the toughest year for us in the 8 years of being at number 28 DHS. December used to be the month that helped carry us thought the quiet in the new year but that’s no longer the case. December’24 saw our first drop of 25% on December’23 and last December another 25% drop on 2024. Generally the average spend has gone down massively so we are really trying to do what we can to not only survive but fight and turn the business around. Brick and mortar shops are no joke, the large overheads alone are crippling for any small independent business at the moment. On top of that our fair business model means we have no income if we don’t make sales as we only take a commission on sold items and don’t charge our traders any rent. Footfall isn’t the issue. Our offering isn’t the issue - if we got a pound for every time someone says cute, want or amazing we’d do quite well. People are just not spending as freely as they used to and everyone is feeling the squeeze. So 2026 will see some big changes so we can make sure we can continue doing what we do. Watch this space!

A big thank you to all that have supported us thus far, we appreciate your every visit, chat and a smile. And a massive thanks to all our traders for being patient and understanding during such a tricky year. It wasn’t only tough business wise but personally too. Family and health issues had thrown in more obstacles that we could handle which brought on more disruption - it caused unfortunate delays in comms and admin - something that can’t be avoided if the business only relies on two people to run it in every aspect of its needs. We are only human after all. We will be working very hard over the next few months to change things for the better for all, our customers, traders and ourselves.

Dan and I don’t get time off during the year so we take a couple of weeks holiday during the festive season to see our family and get back second week of January. So we will be off grid until then. 2025 was our toughest year yet and we definitely need time out to evaluate and recuperate.

Jon started XII Trials whilst working from home and took inspiration from mythology and ancient heroes, because these characters are often flawed and imperfect they make great characters to learn from. XII Trials donates a portion of it’s revenue to charity to support physical and mental wellbeing and sometimes let’s it’s members decide which charity the money should go to.

popped in yesterday with his latest works celebrating our local area. You can now find his new works ‘Deptford High street’ screenprint and a digital ‘Deptford Tube logo’ print in our gallery. Sam Kerridge is a South London based illustrator, streetartist and printmaker. Sam’s work aims to challenge our perceptions of space and utilizes kaliedoscpic visions that trick the eye. His geometric structures are inspired by patterns formed in crystal rock formations, to invoke the ever changing urban environment and how they imprint on our memories.
