Maddie Fox

Maddie explores intimacy, desire and power through combining the cinematic with the painterly. By cropping stills from film until they become almost indistinguishable, she captures and paints moments of tension. Fleeting moments in time are suspended allowing charged subtleties to be brought to the foreground. The power dynamics within her compositions are often uncertain and she hopes to reinforce this ambiguity through constrictive framing and the application of paint.
Her paintings are hazy in quality and possess a tinted blue glow reminiscent of cinema as well as a feminine softness and sparkle. She positions the viewer as the vo**ur and seduces them through the female gaze to create an unsettling yet sensual atmosphere.
Maddie sometimes accompanies her paintings with sculpture, specifically upscaled romantically charged objects such as jewellery. Through creating these disproportionate tactile objects of desire, she raises questions around the inherent tension between such pieces and ownership.

Lily SkyeLily Skye

Lily's latest project explores the experiences and opinions of young people growing up in the Highlands. It delves into their lives and sheds light on not only the challenges they face but also their hopes and dreams. Raised in the Highlands herself, Lily understands the complexities and challenges that come with growing up in a place that is beautiful but also socially and economically disadvantaged. Through her project, she aims to give voice to the young people who navigate these challenges daily.
Balintore, located on the northeast coast of the Highlands, is within the top 10% of deprived areas in Scotland. It has been labelled a "demographic time bomb" with 47% of young people aged 16-29 planning to leave the area in the next years. By sharing their stories and experiences, I hope to bring attention to this issue. And be an advocate for positive change within the community, especially for the young people, the next generation. I want them to have every opportunity possible and not be set back or stereotyped for where they live. I love growing up in Balintore but I was lucky and priviledged, the same can't be said for some of those living there. I want to show them that they can do whatever they dream of doing!

Am byth gyda mi
For the longest time I hated the place I grew up, all I could think about was how I couldn’t wait to leave. Coming to university and having that space from home made me remember the beauty of the place I grew up and lived all my life. Am byth gyda mi ( forever with me ) is a project that explores how I’ve fallen in love with the valleys again. I want it to show that despite me living somewhere new, I always find myself coming back. Taking these images has really helped me to see the beauty of the valleys as well as the people. I want this project to be a reminder to never forget where I came from. This place is home and I’m proud of that Making this body of work has made me realise how proud I am to be a Welsh Woman and to come from such a supportive community and through my image making I want to show that appreciation.

‘Lost & Found’
Lost and Found is a series of medium format portraits, utilising daylight to illuminate gestures of intimacies within my subjects to embrace reality.
Each couple were approached through social media platforms and I selected them as the way they revealed themselves so authentically, inspired me.
I deliberately chose outdoor locations as backdrops, as rock formations and ancient trees illicit feelings of permanence and security in an ever-increasing unstable world.
In a love lost generation, my endeavour is to highlight connections found and strengthened by real understanding and acceptance of one another. These bonds are manifested through their body language and fixed eternally by my photographs.

To be Trusted With a Hammer
What can the freedom to learn through tactility and play look like in the 21st Century, where tangible experiences are stifled by a rigid educational structure?
To be Trusted With a Hammer is a photographic exploration of the idea that learning by playing offers a child the most solid foundation from which to grow. Spending time in a Cornish forest school, I worked to visually emphasise the seemingly eccentric and unconventional approach that differs to traditional early-year learning.
Having spent weeks with the same children, I became more aware of the way in which our typical school system inhibits opportunities to embrace our instincts.
I welcomed the ethos of forest school, trusting the children with a new process by handing them disposable cameras to discover, and a shutter release cable to take their own portraits. By allowing the children to immerse themselves into a new process of navigating a camera, I uncovered feelings of control and self-assurance.
The subsequent series visualises a supervised, yet self-motivated learning environment that provides an alternative to the current structure. The process of creation has allowed me to reflect on my own relationship with play as an adult and contemplate the ways in which I experienced education as a younger child.

Algorithms are making kids desperately unhappy, digital, 2024.
Digital editorial illustration made to sit alongside a New York Times article. The abstract imagery is inspired by the argument that algorithms are taking away human rituals of exploration, and trial and error.

City of Stolen Magic Book Cover, digital, 2024.
Digitally illustrated book cover for children's book City of Stolen Magic written by Nazneen Ahmed Pathak. The imagery is inspired by the motif of Indian taviz charms, used to contain written spells in the story.

The Death of a Photographer
The practice of photography can become the death of a photographer in itself, both in direct and indirect ways. Talking about the effects on the photographer's health when working within the photographic field, but also more long lasting effects that go on to cause damage for future generations. In particular the waste and pollution both digital and analogue photography generate. As well as their contributions towards the deterioration of the natural environment and climate change. These ideas and the search for something more sustainable are the foundations to this project. I have created an explorative collective of alternative process created works in an attempt to reduce personal and environmental harm as a photographer myself.

I'm a photographer with Polish roots. My expertise lies in still-life and landscape photography. My work is often heavily influenced by family and memories. I integrate those themes into my nature photographs, aiming to evoke a sense of healing and connection with the natural world.

SILENT CONVERSATION
This project explores the powerful link between personal healing, grief, and nature's therapeutic role. After losing my Father, I found solace in nature's healing embrace, inspired by his hidden love for photography. Through capturing nature's beauty, each photo becomes a conversation with him, reviving our connection and symbolising my journey through grief and healing.
Ultimately, it aims to inspire others to embrace the transformative potential of nature for emotional well-being. It highlights the relationship between humanity and the natural world and emphasises its profound healing effects.

Francesca Casini

I am intrigued by the intricate relationship between individuals and their environments. My work explores the complexities of human psychology and identity, delving into the subtle connections we share with both non-human species and each other. My photographic intention is to capture the unspoken nuances that define our interaction and show the subtle connections between people and the places they frequent, highlighting the natural bond between them.

Frammenti, 2023
This project is informed by my grandmother's experience of dementia. It sets out to explore the profound impact of dementia on family dynamics. These images aim to capture, what is for me, the essence of my grandmother's belongings, each holding a unique story and a fragment of her past. Through this work I seek to articulate the transformative effects of dementia on identity, relationships, and the perception of life. Rather than simply witnessing the disappearance of identity, I hope to raise awareness and foster improved understanding of the profound changes experienced by individuals and their families when dealing with this challenging condition.

Three Associations
The unknown is what occurs in the transition between wakefulness and sleep.

Three Associations', a series of spontaneous works developed over the year. It features a looping Super 8mm film, photographed performances, and found objects, deliberately manifested as embryonic. Theatrical staging and miming by charismatic figures create alternate realities, while dormant objects from Almas' mise-en-scène re-emerge in the gallery.

Through blinking eyes and the mind's eye, Almas presents a window to a world slipping between multi-layered realities. Her work problematizes expectations of reality, materializing dreams to form a visual cosmos of meaning.

Originating from Bulgaria, I refined my photography skills in London, focusing on wedding and commercial work. My recent studies in fine art photography have broadened my portfolio. I strive to encapsulate life’s essence, converting ordinary moments into compelling narratives and visual poetry.

FALL IN, 2022-2024
“Fall In" explores the balance between innocence and conflict, drawing from childhood wonder and the solemnity of war depicted in Giuseppe Ungaretti's "Soldati." It contrasts the innocence of collecting fallen leaves with the harsh realities of war. These leaves, once tokens of beauty for my daughter, now symbolise life's fleeting nature and serve as silent witnesses to distant conflicts. I capture this interplay through photography, employing techniques to obscure the line between abstraction and perception.

“Fall In" urges viewers to reflect on their place in the world, recognising the complexity of perception shaped by personal experiences. As in Ungaretti's poem, we are like autumn leaves, each with a unique story in the fabric of existence.

My photographic practice is a combination of both Fine Art and Documentary photography, with a particular focus on experimental exploration of identity. While my primary focus is digital photography, I have recently developed a keen interest in analogue techniques, appreciating the unique textures and depth achievable with 35mm film. My objective is to investigate identity through diverse approaches, including monochrome street phototgraphy, mixed media compositions, and portraiture. Through these methods, I strive to capture humility and honesty through my story.

Currently I aim to expand my understanding of the creative industry through networking, pursuing internships, and assisting professionals. My objective is to acquire valuable experience within the industry and establish meaningful connections with industry experts which would expand on my own practice as a whole.

My work is made up from transforming ordinary cityscapes into abstract compositions serving as an escape from the conventional style of urban photography. With each image I created I meticulously manipulated and fragmented old images and postcards of buildings reconstructing them so they fit into a visual narrative that mirrors my personal interpretation of a cityscape. Just like in the streets of a city there are a multitude of diverse architectural features that all seamlessly work together in an area like a large scale complex puzzle perfectly fitting together. Fundamentally this shaped all of my images into my artistic expression that it is now. By using photography as my medium of choice it has led me to flattening three dimensional structures into two dimensional images and further deconstructing them by making them into smaller sections and then reconstructing the images out of these fragmentations. I aim to convey the intricacies of structures and diverse architectural forms showing the artificial nature of photography but also inviting the viewer to question the nature of these constructed realities where buildings are flattened and reshaped into a new abstract form. By incorporating vibrant colours into select images of my work adds an additional layer of distortion infusing my images with a visual contemporary aesthetic inviting the viewers to explore my images in a different style from reality to imagination. Overall my work seeks to challenge the perceptions of urban landscapes inviting viewers to reconsider what they know as real. By creating my imagery this way, through fragmentation I further invite them to embark on a journey of discovery through the city where the boundaries between reality and illusions blur transforming my work into a fresh blank canvas where they can appreciate the complexities of fabricated environment.
