Last chance to view | b chehayeb’s solo exhibition ‘tomboy heaven’ continues at Workplace | London until this Saturday 11 January.

The exhibition features new paintings by chehayeb, which explore the complexities of memory, identity and cultural hybridity.

Enveloped in her experience of growing up in West Texas in the early 90’s, the paintings are marked by blocks of vibrant colour - dirt red and loamy ochres mix with deep blues of Texan skies, which gather haphazardly to form vast dreamlike tableaus upon which stories and histories play out.

Simeon Barclay has produced a limited-edition artwork to mark Castlefield Gallery’s 40 year anniversary.

‘Clack Clack’ is inspired by the surrealist hand silhouettes that adorned Diane von Furstenberg’s Fall/Winter 2012 couture collection. Barclay takes this motif producing a graphic signature that whilst suggesting movement, playfully references the mixologist, recalling their physical relationship to the cocktail shaker and the act of Cocktail making. This mixing action is also alluded to in the title of the design Clack Clack which suggests the rattling sound of the ice in the process of chilling and dilution.

The artist’s chosen cocktail is the ‘Last Word’, a gin-based cocktail originating at the Detroit Athletic Club in the 1910s, shortly before the start of Prohibition.

40 years of the FutureL Editions have been developed in collaboration with Castlefield Gallery Artist patron Ryan Gander OBE RA.

Last chance | Paul Barlow’s solo exhibition ‘Thin air’ is on view at Workplace | Newcastle until 12 December.

The works installed in Workplace | Newcastle are placed with attention given to the space between the works. Three new larger works are tall and thin, and obliquely echo the proportions of a human - subtly registering their physicality as such to the viewer. These are punctured by two smaller square-format works.

Together they become an intervention into the architecture of the gallery, the spatial tension evinced within and between each work becomes palpable – operating together as if an orchestral score articulated by silent objects.

Open by appointment. Please email [email protected] to arrange a visit.

On view | Paul Barlow’s solo exhibition ‘Thin air’ at Workplace | Newcastle.

The title of the exhibition ‘Thin air’ evokes the paradoxical and indeterminate nature of Barlow’s practice. Assertive in their presence as both image and objects, there is a sense that they have just materialised - as if out of thin air - and may yet disappear again at any moment.

Firmly rooted in the sublime, Barlow’s use of paint seeping into water and his intentional warp and weft between positive application and negative removal relates his work, by association, to ink paintings of East Asian tradition and their philosophical and contemplative underpinnings. Barlow’s work is however more closely aligned to a contemporary understanding of the sublime - that of deep mathematics, of fractal curves, particle physics, and wave forms and noise, ebbing and flowing, rinsing and repeating infinitely.

Open by appointment until 12 December.

Simeon Barclay draws upon a rich vein of pop cultural sources, producing works that activate complex cultural histories, whilst exploring the ways in which we navigate identity, both imposed or self-curated.

Barclay’s background in industry directly feeds into his work, addressing narrow constructions of masculinity as well as informing the glossy surfaces and use of industrial fabrication techniques throughout his work.

Cabaniuk’s large and thickly painted abstract paintings delve into charged memories of encounters. Painted with speed, and in a performative mode, they explore ideas of a q***r temporality and how experience, histories and identities can shift and dissolve outside of a conventional linear developmental progression. The abstraction and constant state of change leans into the opacity of q***rness, traversing bodily and emotional autonomy.

Robin Megannity, ‘with tombed visions’, 2024

On view as part of our group presentation for NADA Miami 2024 which opens next week.

Historical techniques and traditions of painting are appropriated and quoted in Robin Megannity's work, and the pathos, melancholy and solemnity of Northern European still life paintings are interrupted by references to digital image making.

Glitches and ruptures in the framing of his images connect the temporality of the historical source imagery with commonplace contemporary means of media manipulation.

Laura Lancaster is included in our presentation for NADA Miami 2024 which opens next week.

Lancaster makes paintings from found imagery, collected from anonymous analogue photographs and film. She transposes the lost and discarded memories of strangers into an ambiguous territory between abstraction and figuration.

Divorced from their specific context and time Lancaster relocates the image to a place of collective memory. Shifting between the sentimental and the grotesque, Lancaster’s paintings are uncanny and strange, dreamlike visions from a shared consciousness.

On view | Paul Barlow’s solo exhibition ‘Thin air’ at Workplace | Newcastle continues until 12 December.

Paul Barlow’s paintings are built from an intensely obsessive process of accrual and removal. Beginning with an unprimed stretched canvas positioned flat on the floor, Barlow floods the canvas with highly diluted acrylic paint. Then, hung vertically upon the wall Barlow applies a higher concentrate of acrylic - allowing the pigment to bleed into the water soaked canvas. This process is repeated over and over, often interrupted by a complete rewashing of the canvas.

Ahead of our participation in NADA Miami 2024 next week we will be spotlighting artists included in our presentation.

Meredith Sellers is an artist and writer living and working in Philadelphia. Sellers’ paintings fuse the traditional concept of paintings as pictorial windows with the boundless possibilities of the digital screen. By appropriating images from a diverse range of sources - including digital advertisements, stock photography, art history and news outlets - Sellers confronts the underlying systems of power, wealth, and violence that shape our contemporary experience.

Through the juxtaposition of halting and visceral portrayals of destruction, such as car crashes, alongside subtler indicators of catastrophe like dripping taps and melting ice-shelves, Sellers’ works present a compelling meditation on the prevailing macroeconomic, ecological and political forces that shape us.
