Artist Spotlight: Paula Rego ✨

New images by Paula Rego are now available on Bridgeman Images, including works that reflect the artist’s distinctive approach to storytelling through art.

Drawing on fairy tales, literature and folklore, Rego created vivid, often unsettling scenes that explore human relationships, gender, power and social conventions. Her work challenges familiar narratives, bringing complex emotions and the experiences of women to the forefront.

Artist Spotlight: Melissa Scott-Miller ✨

New to Bridgeman Images, Melissa Scott-Miller is a British painter known for her meticulous depictions of London and its urban landscape.

Growing up among the red-brick mansion blocks of Kensington, Scott-Miller developed an early fascination with the city’s streets and architecture. Working from life, she captures the intricate details of London’s rooftops and streetscapes, from church spires and office blocks to roof gardens, fire escapes, cranes and treetops.
Alongside her cityscapes, Scott-Miller is also an acclaimed portrait painter and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, creating portraits from life with richly detailed backgrounds.

Wanda Wulz pushed photography beyond the traditional studio portrait.

A pioneering Italian photographer, Wulz moved between professional studio practice and avant-garde experimentation. In 1932, she presented a series of experimental photographs in Trieste, including her iconic self-portrait Cat and I, created through superimposition.

Her work is currently being celebrated at the Estorick Collection in Wanda and Marion Wulz: Avant-garde Photography in 20th-Century Italy, exploring the sisters’ contribution to modern photographic culture in Italy.

Hag 🌟

Completing his photographic studies at the Polytechnic of Central London, now Westminster University, in 1971, Premium + Bridgeman Artist Hag worked as an assistant to a leading advertising photographer. Hag then followed his own creative path. He built his first dark room in 1973 and continued experimenting with Combination Printing.

He has worked as an ‘Independent Photographer’ ever since. His photographs are all produced in the dark room juxtaposing and combining elements from original negatives without the use of digital manipulation. His work has been exhibited, published widely and collected by private individuals as well as institutions ranging from the National Portrait Gallery to the Texaco Collection.

Remembering Nicolai Fechin 🎨

Today marks the death anniversary of Nicolai Fechin (1881–1955), the Russian-American painter celebrated for his expressive portraits, richly textured brushwork, and striking depictions of landscapes and Indigenous cultures of the American Southwest.

This year is especially significant as Fechin's work has entered the public domain in many countries, opening up new opportunities to explore and share his remarkable artistic legacy. Güler Ates (1977; Mus, Turkey) has a degree in Fine Art: Painting, from the University of Marmara, Istanbul (1998), a BA in Fine Art: Painting, from the Wimbledon School of Art, London (2004) and a Print MA from the Royal College of Art, London (2008). Ates works with video, photography, printmaking and performance. Gender, faith, and identity are central themes in Ates’ work and at the heart lies an exploration into the experience of cultural displacement.

Manifestations of her work are realised through performance and site-responsive activities that merge Eastern and Western sensibilities. Ates questions the relationship between the veil and the West, by setting the veiled female figure within a lush or historic European interior. The selected architectural sites hold specific links to colonialism, post-colonialism, and the ‘East’.

Edgar Holloway 🌟

Etcher, watercolourist, calligrapher and teacher, Edgar Holloway was born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire in 1914. Leaving grammar school at the age of 13 he studied at evening classes at the school of Art in Doncaster, Yorkshire and through a correspondence course on etching. He earned a living from etchings and portrait commissions, sold through his father's print and frame making shop.

The family moved to London in 1931. By 1941 he came under the influence of Eric Gill and in 1949 settled in Ditchling, Sussex, becoming a member of the Order of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic. He exhibit exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Society of Artist Printmakers, becoming a member of both. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the New English Art Club. .

Eileen Agar 🎨

Eileen Agar was born in Buenos Aires to a Scottish father and an American mother. She went to school in England and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Rebelling against her privileged upbringing, she left her husband and in 1929 moved to Paris with her lover, the writer Joseph Bard.

In the 1930s Agar was a leading British exponent of Surrealism, although she remained distinct from the political and theoretical aspects of the movement. Agar made collages, paintings, objects and photographs and was the only professional British female artist who exhibited at the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London.
