I love this sketch from M. Sunjoto: "How to Light Travel to Japan."

It's reassuring to know that even when we're on holiday, lighting designers remain completely predictable:

Bring cash.
Buy tickets the instant they become available.
Explore architecture.
Get distracted by an alleyway.
End up spending more time studying the lighting than the actual tourist attraction.

"Look at that temple!"

Me: "Yes, but have you noticed the beautifully balanced warm-white accent lighting and the excellent glare control?"

Friends: slowly walk away

Accurate. Very accurate. 😆💡🇯🇵

The beverage hierarchy inside Studio-29:
☕ Black coffee before speaking to anyone
🫖 Breakfast tea for pretending we’re organised
🌿 Flavoured tea when someone forgets to buy milk again
☕ Big Boss coffee = milk + one sugar + serious meetings
🍫 Hot chocolate with marshmallows for emotional damage caused by deadlines
🍷 Friday wine because we survived another week of revisions 😂

People assume lighting designers survive on technical knowledge and creativity…
Reality:
we survive on caffeine, sugar, snacks, and group panic.
Huge thanks to M.Sunjoto for documenting the true engineering systems behind every lighting design studio ever created. 💡☕🤣

What if light spoke in whispers?

Concealed lighting holds a quiet power, shaping moods and revealing textures without ever demanding attention. It transforms refined spaces into intimate moments that celebrate subtlety and sophistication.

How do you use hidden light to tell your story?

People imagine lighting designers as highly technical professionals discussing:
⚡ Lux levels
⚡ Beam angles
⚡ Dimming systems
⚡ Emergency lighting compliance
Reality inside Studio-29:
🌧️ Wellington boots when the office floods again 😂

Honestly, the studio could probably survive without electricity for a few hours…
…but not without tea.

Huge thanks to M.Sunjoto for illustrating the emotional support system of every design studio ever created. The only thing missing is a cup labelled:
“When the flood reaches the cable trays.” 🤣☕🌊

Life inside Studio-29 lighting design studio explained in one picture 😂☕
There’s a tea cup for:
☕ before work
☕ when you’re bored
☕ when your brain starts overheating
☕ when the deadline becomes “urgent” at 4:59pm
☕ when you somehow agree to one more revision
At this point we’re not even running on electricity anymore… the whole studio is powered entirely by tea and questionable optimism. ⚡🤣
Huge respect to M Sunjoto for creating the most relatable designer chart ever made. Every creative studio needs this framed on the wall immediately.

You became a lighting designer because you “love beautiful lighting.”

M.Sunjoto captures the harsh reality as your entire life looks like a tiny sun exploded in your studio. 💡✨

One minute you’re saying:
“I just need a few samples for the project.”

Three weeks later:

47 pendants
16 downlights
mystery lamps with no labels,
five versions of “warm white” that somehow all look different and
a pile of drivers actively plotting against you.

Clients: “Can we see another option?”

Me, staring at a mountain of glowing objects like a rabbit in the headlamps
“Absolutely.” 😅

At this point, every flat surface in the office and under your desk is either:

a lighting sample
a box for a lighting sample
a box for the box the lighting sample came in.

And somehow the one sample you ACTUALLY need has vanished into another dimension.

Lighting design: 10% creativity
90% opening boxes and asking,
“Wait… was this 2700K or 3000K?” 🤦‍♂️💡

What's under your desk?

M.Sunjoto's view of lockdown when our video call backgrounds looked like a minimalist Pinterest office setup....

Meanwhile, just outside the camera frame was:

• a mountain of laundry
• 3 empty coffee cups
• cereal bowl
• and at least one chair dedicated to "clothes that aren't dirty but not clean enough for the wardrobe"

What was your hidden secret?

What makes a complex lighting scheme feel effortless? It's the fluid blend of technical precision and artistic layering, where every beam is placed with purpose, sculpting space without overwhelming it.

Mastering this balance means controlling light to highlight texture, shape, and mood while keeping the feeling natural and inviting. It's about choreographing illumination so the technical becomes invisible, and the beauty speaks for itself.

How do you approach creating lighting that is both precise and visually effortless in your projects?

What makes a lighting designer at Studio-29 according to M. Sunjoto?

It's the art of balancing technical mastery with creativity, where every beam is carefully calibrated yet feels natural. This revisit is from the playful and creative mind of a wonderful Studio-29 designer.

What story does your lighting tell?

Lighting is more than brightening a room, it is composing an experience. It shapes how we feel, guides our gaze, and breathes life into every corner. At Studio 29 Lighting, we transform spaces into narratives of light and shadow, crafting atmospheres that resonate deeply and linger long after the light dims.

How will your space speak through light?
