At this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival, Sarah Brocklehurst and Miriam Battye joined a panel exploring the art of adaptation, with EXTRA GEOGRAPHY at the heart of the conversation.
Based on a short story by FWA client Rose Tremain, EXTRA GEOGRAPHY offered a fascinating example of how literary work can be transformed for the screen while retaining the essence of its source.
As Sarah Brocklehurst explained:
“I’m looking for material that will inspire perhaps quite a personal interpretation, adaptation of that source.”
The discussion explored what makes literary work compelling to adapt, the particular opportunities of adapting a short story, and the importance of finding the right balance between fidelity and creative interpretation.
Miriam Battye spoke about the strength and precision of Tremain’s original story, describing her as an “extraordinary, precise writer”, while highlighting the importance of the relationship between an author and those adapting their work.
EXTRA GEOGRAPHY received its UK Premiere at EIFF and will be released on 2 October.

It’s with great sadness that we heard about the recent passing of writer, director and producer Justin Hardy, who died aged 61 following a heart attack.
But we would like to take this moment, on the screening of his final feature WRATH OF THE GODS at FrightFest London this week, to remember Justin and celebrate his life and work.
A BAFTA and Emmy-nominated filmmaker, Justin’s career spanned film, television and documentary, including CHILDREN OF THE WICKER MAN, PRINCES IN THE TOWER, TRAFALGAR BATTLE SURGEON, THE RELIEF OF BELSEN and SPANISH FLU: THE FORGOTTEN FALLEN.
FWA writer client Tina Pepler worked as script editor on the screenplay, continuing a long-standing creative relationship and friendship with Justin that began when he directed Tina’s Channel 4 television drama PRINCES IN THE TOWER in 2005.
Justin was a filmmaker with a remarkable appetite for life and creativity, and leaves behind a varied and distinctive body of work.
We’re pleased to mark the screening of WRATH OF THE GODS by taking a moment to remember Justin and celebrate the work and legacy he leaves behind.

Delighted to attend and celebrate the UK premiere of EXTRA GEOGRAPHY at the weekend in Edinburgh, adapted from Rose Tremain’s short story of the same name and produced by Sarah Brocklehurst. Miriam Battye has adapted the story of Flic and Minna’s intense friendship with love and sensitivity and Molly Manners’ direction adds so much to the bold and hilarious script, bringing out fabulous performances from the young performers. Congratulations to all the very talented cast and crew on this beautiful celebration of girlhood which was so well received.

We’re excited that the film will be out in cinemas on 2 October.
