The Mother stands where memory holds weight.
She gathers the wind and the silence,
Careful not to shatter what must be healed.

Kumudini Lakhia | 1930–2025

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Kumi Ben (as she was fondly referred to), a visionary who was seminal to my journey as a dancer and choreographer. She offered myself and so many others a new way of thinking about our form, Kathak. Deeply passionate and immersive, with restraint, objectivity and perspective, she was a visionary who pioneered a methodology for training, as well as a new way of approaching choreography.

With the passing of each light whose shoulders I sit on, I am reminded again and again of how enormous their impact is to the world, through the simplicity of just loving their Dance with such passion, commitment and conviction. It seems that the unnerved ‘belief’ in practice and form is the thing that is increasingly being challenged by the modern world. And it is this ability to believe that we, as a collective community, need to protect.

Today marks an incredibly exciting day for us here at AKC as we can now reveal the details of the world premiere of our latest production, Thikra: Night of Remembering, created in collaboration with Manal AlDowayan.

Inspired by the Arabic word thikra - meaning 'memory', 'recollection', or 'remembrance' - Thikra: Night of Remembering reflects an annual gathering where past and present unite for one night to honour the profound truth: without the past, there is no future.

We begin the next chapter in this project's evolution at Montpellier Danse Festival, France from 22-24 June.

After three incredible years on the road, the final chapter of Jungle Book reimagined will be written in Japan this June. What started as Akram’s desire to reinterpret Kipling’s classic has grown beyond anything we could have imagined, reaching over 150,000 of you across more than 30 countries.

At its core, the piece carries an urgent message: our disconnection from nature and the crisis we’ve created for all species on this planet. We truly hope it has resonated with you to inspire both reflection and meaningful action.

Remaining tour dates
Poznań, Poland: 29 March
Abu Dhabi, UAE: 4 & 5 April
Ingolstadt, Germany: 24 & 25 May
Saitama & Aichi, Japan: 20-22 & 28 June

These past weeks have been a journey of immersion, exploration, and awakening, and the outcome of this profound spirit has enabled Akram and his team to create something truly extraordinary.

What was felt during our time inside the studio will soon be experienced on stages across the world.

World Premiere: June 2025, details to follow on Friday 21 March.

This , we share a glimpse into the creative process of our latest production. Composed of an all-female collective of Indian classical and contemporary voices, Akram, in collaboration with Manal AlDowayan, draws inspiration from ancient rituals, the gaze of his mother, wife, and daughter, and the stories passed down through generations. Through these perspectives, the work celebrates the ancestral power of the feminine spirit and its profound connection to the natural world.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to see us in Gdańsk and Riga.
Next, we are super excited to be returning to Estonia after nearly 25 years, where Akram once performed Loose in Flight. We bring Chotto Desh to Tallinn for two performances before the show takes a short break until April.

While one part of the Company journeyed deep in the desert, another chapter was unfolding in Bradford; the very first group Memories of the Future rehearsal. We are super excited to welcome emerging choreographer Elliott Augustine to the team. He, alongside Tallulah Shannon and the AKC and DUY teams, led a day of movement exploration where over 70 participants from six DUY groups created, shared and dreamed together.

Memories of the Future premieres on 5 July at the Alhambra Theatre, celebrating Bradford's year as City of Culture 2025.
