‘For me, the body is the most truthful and poetic way of communicating what you’re feeling, because you can’t say that in words. Because we have these invisible walls around us. Perhaps the other person might be offended. The body has a way that is much more metaphoric in many ways, so it feels less threatening. I can talk about stuff through my dance, and people will hopefully still be open to it than if I were to put it in words.’

As the team begins to revisit the Company’s archive ahead of next year’s transition, we’re finding our way back to the beginnings of so many works. These images from the creation of iTMOi (In the Mind of Igor) take us back to a room full of possibilities, before the piece had found its form on stage.
Created by Akram in response to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, iTMOi remains one of the works he returns to often in conversation, even more than a decade later.

We’re reflecting on our recent return to the US for the US premiere of Thikra, made all the more memorable by the generous welcome of two exceptional organisations committed to dance; Lincoln Center and Jacob's Pillow.

Images of the Company’s time at Jacob's Pillow where the beautiful surroundings and shared love of dance made it an inspiring place to reconnect. Thank you to everyone who joined us - we look forward to returning to the West Coast in autumn.

Artist Encounter with Akram Khan: Anatomy of a Story
12 October | The Bhavan

Six months out from our closure in March 2027, Akram brings his voice to Dance Umbrella’s Artist Encounters for a rare, intimate window into his creative mind.

Hosted at The Bhavan, a space deeply woven into Akram’s own history, Anatomy of a Story is a unique opportunity to engage with Akram’s philosophy during this profound moment in his artistic journey.

Don’t miss this opportunity to share the space with Akram during our final chapter.

‘One of the greatest gifts one can give someone is believing in them.’

I am deeply saddened to accept that my Guru, Pratap Pawar, has recently passed away. My Guru was an inspiration to many…
Not just through his art, but through his absolute sense of conviction and the belief he instilled in the many students he taught.

I often feel that I had two fathers: my biological father and my artistic father.

Now, sadly, both have passed away.

Yet neither has truly left me. I will always continue to carry the many valuable lessons enshrined in their life stories with me, and through me.

Tomorrow brings the final performance of Lady Macbeth at Opera House, Copenhagen. It has been a real privilege for Akram to work side by side with the artists and team of Royal Danish Ballet to create such a deeply layered reimagining of this story.

Copenhagen, thank you for stepping into the shadows with us.
