FRAGILE

FRAGILE Artist agency & art gallery fragile [ˈfrædʒaɪl] = delicate, fine

FRAGILE's aim is to support upcoming and established artists alike.

As a place to exchange and combine, to inspire and cross-fertilise it is a platform for artistic expression, celebrating the beauty of interaction between creative disciplines. Inspired by the lively and constantly evolving scene of East London's artistic quarter it was born out of the idea to create a vehicle for young ideas and fresh approaches. As talent agency, FRAGILE acts as advocate and amp

lified voice of the artist to promote his or her work to the public via exhibitions, publications and other art-related events. Its ethos is that of an agora, a meeting point for conscious minds, creators and thinkers alike. By recognising the aptitudes of diverse individuals and combining them together the aim as collective is to create discourses, construct temporary autonomous zones and push boundaries. FRAGILE is the brainchild of editor Yvonne Riepl (initially curator of La Maison De FaY) and was founded in London in 2011.

In The Dutch Settlers (1982), Jean-Michel Basquiat splices markers of historical exploitation ("TO***CO"), the birthplace of African civilisation ("NUBIA"), and religious references ("SAMSON") with a drawing of an ibex, the megafauna of the Engadin region of Switzerland.

The monumental nine-panel painting is the stand-out work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Engadin at Hauser & Wirth St Moritz (until 29 March), the first exhibition to focus on Basquiat’s relationship with the Alpine region.

The loans-based show has been put together with the help of the curator Dieter Buchhart, a Basquiat scholar who has organised exhibitions such as Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made in Japan, held at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo in 2019. That exhibition looked to assess the artist’s relationship to Japan; the other major country that Basquiat frequented during his short life—Italy, and especially Rome and Florence—is surely next in Buchhart’s sights.

Halloween Eve calls for hauntingly beautiful art.

Set the mood for a chilling night in with distorted, surreal, and uncanny portraits that create tension and atmosphere. https://bit.ly/Moody-Portraits
