The Old Vic is an independent creative powerhouse for entertainment and education. We believe that theatre makes the world better and that anyone should be able to access and experience it - to understand it, entertain it and benefit from it. We are uniquely placed to achieve all of this as a large 1,000 seat theatre in the heart of London, focusing on creating equal access. We make world-class entertainment on an international scale, reaching audiences of 350k+ every year through eclectic seasons of work, and a further 10,000 through free programmes for engagement, employment and social mobility. Our duality is important to us. It unites us. We’re so much more than the work we do on stage. We’re about creative excellence and social good. The Old Vic: Step into something wonderful.

On this day in 1957, Dame Judi Dench made her professional stage debut in Hamlet at The Old Vic — and thankfully didn't listen to the reviews.

🌹 35 years ago, this legendary musical revival was taking The Old Vic by storm...

The show was Carmen Jones — Oscar Hammerstein's brilliant musical reimagining of Bizet's opera which swaps 19th century Spain for the American Deep South during WWII.

The production was an instant sensation. It made history as one of London's largest theatre shows with an all-Black cast and as the most-nominated production at the 1992 Olivier Awards, where it picked up three awards, including Best New Musical.

After a spectacular two-year run at The Old Vic, the production embarked on an international tour around Europe and Japan.
