When the system’s under pressure and lives are on the line, who takes time to care for the carers? Every day these nurses go to work and change lives. It’s not just about putting broken bones back tog

ether. Their care safeguards our future. Premiering at Edinburgh in 2023, Tending is a look inside the inner lives of these nurses. It takes audiences on a journey to the heart of the healthcare system, and exposes the experiences of those working on its front-line. Drawing on over 50 interviews with nurses of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, this is the story of those workers who so often go overlooked. By turn funny and affecting, shocking and poignant, hilarious and heart-breaking: these are the lives of the people who might one day save yours.

“I was staying in a friend’s house and I was sat in front of their cracked coffee table. The crack had been filled with yellow resin and had an inscription beside it : ‘There is a Crack in Everything, That’s How the Light Gets In’. This sentence made me think about our modern day relationship to spirituality, grief and the power and pitfalls of inspirational quotes.“

‘We all carry around technology that bombards us with podcast clips, live-streamed atrocities, and skincare ads. I’m fascinated by how fragmented attention obliterates our sense of self. This is a very small extract of a much longer piece experimenting with how this new everyday reality could be represented on stage.’

India said: “Like Canaries in Coal Mines is an excerpt from a larger piece in development exploring belief as something contagious and relational. Set in a school, it follows young people still learning what they believe by testing it on one another, at an age when belief is generous, movable, and shared. It asks what happens when hope is placed in people before its weight is fully understood.”
