Jean Genet drawings revisited 2025
I’ve revisited a series of drawings recently that I did in the late 1980s, when I was reading Jean Genet’s novels. He appealed to my anarchist philosophy leanings then, and of course he was an important and wonderful writer. I also coincidently embraced gay clubbing culture around that time, Heaven, FF, and later, Trade, the music and the people were great, and one could escape the sexist lad culture that was everywhere.
The first drawing is one of the originals from the series, it’s titled ‘The Thief's Journal, Lenin looks on in disgust, where are the workers?’, it’s from May 1987, Ink, acrylic on paper. It’s 22x27cm.
The two drawing developments are from this year, 2025. Both are titled ‘The Thief’s Journal’, one is Media 4IR and ink on paper, the other is Media 4IR, watercolour, and ink on paper, both are 27x35cm.
