The children giving the ‘beggar boy’ money are the children of Sir Francis Ford. He was a wealthy plantation owner and politician. At the time he was facing pressure to abolish the slave trade, and paintings like this were part of an effort by pro slavery campaigners to claim that the poor in England lived worse lives that the slaves in the West Indies.
The only redeeming factor I can see here is the little spaniel, who I’m sure loves everyone. 🐕 @ Tate Gallery, Britain
