Directors UK The home for film and TV directors Directors UK is the professional association of UK screen directors.

It is a membership organisation representing the creative, economic and contractual interests of over 8,000 members – the majority of working TV and film directors in the UK. Directors UK negotiates rights deals and collects and distributes royalties to its members. It also campaigns and lobbies on its members’ behalf and provides a range of services including legal advice, events and career development. Directors UK works closely with fellow organisations around the world to represent directors’ rights and concerns, promotes excellence in the craft of direction and champions change to the current landscape to create an equal opportunity industry for all.

This weekend at the Directors UK Festival, members and industry voices came together to share ideas and experiences. From keynote speakers Asif Kapadia sharing an insight into his remarkable career, and Baroness Beeban Kidron on the impact of digital technology on everything from commissioning to attention spans, to panels exploring challenging on-set moments, how filmmakers manage safety, non-traditional career paths, and more — all from the unique point of view of the director.

Azhur Saleem directed the final three episodes of Outlander: Blood of My Blood’s first season and has since wrapped work on season two. Brought onto the prequel series by cinematographer Neville Kidd, with whom he’d worked on Anansi Boys, Azhur inherited a show that demanded sensitive handling of nudity alongside practical location challenges with Scotland’s rugged terrain and a compressed US schedule.

As the second season starts streaming this week, we speak with Azhur about his work on Season 1, from the discipline of planning before the camera rolls, to knowing when a single shot is worth fighting for.

Directors UK has submitted its response to the Government's Media Green Paper, “Watch this Space” a public consultation on the future of television and media in the UK.

In our response, we highlighted the issues that matter most to directors and the steps the Government must take to support them.

These include the importance of strong public service media, ensuring UK-produced programmes remain visible and discoverable online, supporting sustainable freelance careers, and creating genuine opportunities for directorial talent across the nations and regions.
