We are celebrating the release of KELELA 🍉’s amazing new record ‘new avatar’ which is out today via Warp Records
Today, Kelela releases her highly anticipated third album, new avatar, via Warp Records. The 12-track project further expands the sonic world she has meticulously crafted, blending electronic music, alternative R&B, guitar-driven production, and deeply personal lyricism into her most expansive artistic statement yet.
Earlier this week, Kelela shared “the bridge” ft. PinkPantheress, the album’s final preview ahead of today’s release. Kelela invites PinkPantheress into her world for their second collaboration as their breathy vocals mimic the steaminess of packed club windows, which are anchored by syncopated snares over a moody synth. The scene of this song sits in the memory of her rides home from Bushwick clubs into the city, capturing post-club limerence while watching the sunrise over the Williamsburg Bridge in the height of summer. Directed by Yasser Abubeker, the accompanying music video brings the song’s hazy romance to life. Watch the music video here.
“When it comes to genre, so much of what we compartmentalize isn’t natural; it’s something institutions and structures impose on us. My goal as an artist is to express what feels true to me regardless of whether or not it fits into those boundaries,” explains Kelela. “When I do that, I know I’m creating space for other people to feel affirmed in their own perspective. My hope for this record is that everyone can experience this catharsis of integration with me. I also need everyone to put some respect on R&B’s name — it being as foundational as it is expansive, and to rethink what alternative and rock music can be.”
